Legend of Jiuxian Mountain
Jiuxian Mountain is a picturesque mountain with pleasant scenery, and is well-known in Qi and Lu. There are many different opinions about the origin of its name. One theory is that when the Eight Immortals crossed the sea, they passed by this mountain. It was a long drought, and there was no grass growing in the wild mountains and ridges. The people living under the mountain also had difficulty surviving. In order to make this mountain rejuvenated and save the mountain people from the water and fire, the immortals and the mountain gods planted flowers, plants and trees on the mountain. Tieguai Li used his boots to bring clean water from the East China Sea and sprinkled it all over the hills and wilderness. The flowers, plants and trees were happy to see the sweet dew and quickly reborn. In a few days, the mountain was full of green, trees formed forests, flowers bloomed, butterflies flew and bees danced, and spring was in the air. The whole mountain was dressed up like a big garden, saving the local people from the troubles of drought and lack of rain. When the Eight Immortals left, Tieguai Li's boots were thrown on the top of the mountain in Xue Valley, which became today's Xueshi. Han Xiangzi inserted flutes around the boots and grew a bamboo garden. Lotus Fairy also inserted lotus flowers in the pool water in the mountains, and soon the lotus fragrance was overflowing. Because the mountain god also made contributions in saving the mountain from drought and rain and making it green again, when the mountain was named, the mountain god was included and called the Nine Immortals, so the mountain was named Jiuxian Mountain. Another saying is that the ninth immortal is not the mountain god but Sun Bin. Because Sun Bin had stationed troops, stored grain, and fought in this mountain, and later wrote "Sun Bin's Art of War" here, people built a college for him in the mountain where Sun Bin studied in order to commemorate this great military strategist. Although these things are not recorded in history, they are widely circulated among the people. According to the legend, Sun Bin was the first division of Qi at that time. In order to prevent the invasion of Chu, he set up camp on Paigu Mountain at the southern foot of this mountain and built Paigu City Barracks. He fought with Yuan Da Li Mu Dugu Chen and others at Baijiangkou. A lot of guns, swords, arrows, etc. were unearthed here a few years ago and are now in the museum. At that time, the army stationed in Xuegu and built granaries. The place where grain was stored is now called Cangling. There is a large millstone at the foot of the mountain, which grinds rice day and night for the army to eat. After liberation, the millstone was taken away by the villagers at the foot of the mountain. Now only one plate is left, which can be seen behind the guard room in front of Sun Bin Academy. Due to the strength of Qi State and Sun Bin's military prowess, he won many battles and finally defeated Pang Juan at Maling Road to avenge his hatred. He then abandoned his post as a military advisor and lived in seclusion at the foot of Baodu Peak, the head of the Xie Valley of Jiuxian Mountain, where he built a thatched cottage and studied military books and never left the mountain. Here, he wrote the eternal "Sun Bin's Art of War" based on "The Art of War" and his own real lines. This book was not discovered in Linyi until two thousand years after Sun Bin's death. It was spread among the people that Sun Bin was a god in military prowess and became an immortal. Therefore, when naming this mountain, the Eight Immortals plus Sun Bin became Nine Immortals, and it was named Jiuxian Mountain.
