🎧  Listen to Introduction

Miyun has a long history. According to legends and historical records, humans lived on this land as early as before the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. In the long-term production and life practices, people have created many legends and stories, which have been passed down from generation to generation. Miyun has two large rivers since ancient times, namely Chaohe River and Baihe River. The Baihe River has a large basin and often floods, which have caused great harm to the people on both sides of the river. Therefore, the simple working people hope that there is a way to conquer the frequent floods. So the story of Yexian Tower was born. There is a brick tower called "Yexian Tower" on the mountain northeast of Miyun County. There is a lamp on the top of the tower. At night, the red light shines and can be seen from a long distance. As soon as the wanderers step into the county boundary, they can see the towering tower body, which gives them a feeling of "coming home". "Ye Tower Fairy Lamp" is one of the eight scenic spots in ancient Miyun. The legend of Yexian Tower records the story of "the immortal Ji Xiaotang fighting the catfish grandma". According to legend, there was a catfish spirit called Catfish Grandma in ancient times, who often stirred up storms on the two main rivers of Miyun, Chaohe and Baihe, and destroyed the fertile fields on both sides. The immortal Ji Xiaotang fought with the catfish spirit and finally suppressed the catfish spirit under the Yexian Tower, eliminating the harm for the people. This story reflects people's good wishes to eliminate evil and promote good, and has high textual value. It is similar to the "Legend of the White Snake", one of the "Four Major Folk Legends" in my country, which reflects people's good wishes to eliminate evil and promote good from one aspect. The Yexian Tower has a unique geographical location, 335 meters above sea level, located on the back mountain of the densely populated Miyun County, and naturally became the symbol of Miyun County. As soon as the wanderers step into the county boundary, they can see the towering tower, which gives them a feeling of "coming home", giving the Miyun people who wander around the world a "reassurance". It has had a huge impact on the Miyun people's love for their hometown. In June 2007, it was approved by the Miyun County People's Government as the first batch of Miyun County-level intangible cultural heritage projects.
