🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Miao ethnic group's "carved wood" is also called "carved wood". It is translated into Chinese as "Miao ethnic group wedding song". It is mainly circulated in a hillside depression in Feiyun Grand Canyon, Yangliutang Town, Shibing County, Guizhou Province. "Carved wood" is the only wood-carved record symbol preserved among the Miao people living in China. It is the earliest record of the Miao people and the oldest writing tool of this branch. According to the "Zhenyuan Prefecture Records" of the Qing Dynasty Qianlong, the Miao people "have no written language, and use bamboo and wood to carve several inches when exchanging gifts, which is called 'carved wood'". In marriage, "the daughter of the aunt is determined to be the daughter-in-law of the uncle. If there is no child, she must be offered to the uncle again, which is called nephew money, otherwise she will not be allowed to marry or invite young people to communicate for life". "Guizhou Chronicles" also records that the Miao people "carve wood to show trust, which still retains the ancient custom". The Miao Marriage Song was created in a period of history after the Miao people's matriarchal clan transitioned to a patriarchal clan. Although it contains content about ethnic migration and totem worship, it is different from those ancient songs and ancient lyrics that reflect the creation of the world, the beginning of the world, and the origin of mankind. It mainly reflects the marriage status under the uncle's power system. It is called "the oldest living fossil of marriage in the Miao people" by ethnologists and folklorists, and has very important value in the study of the development history of the Miao people. "Kedao" is the longest-standing, largest-scale, and most widely spread drinking song among the ancient songs of the Miao people, with more than 10,000 lines of lyrics. It was created, accumulated, and evolved by the ancestors of the Miao people in their long-term production and life practices. During this period, it absorbed the essence of excellent folk songs of other ethnic groups and formed the unique characteristics and style of Miao poetry. The ancient song's description of the environment and the portrayal of the characters' language, actions, psychology, and personality are vivid and lifelike. "Ke Dao" is a long Miao marriage narrative poem with a strong national flavor. It is also a large-scale and long-standing Miao ancient book. It not only has achieved high literary and artistic achievements, but also has important value in the study of the origin and migration of the Miao people, totem worship, mathematical knowledge, linguistics and other aspects.
