Baojing County, Hunan Province, is located in the central part of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province. Miao painting was originally just a pattern draft for Miao embroidery, including clothing, quilt covers, bed curtains, door curtains, hall curtains, bed eaves, wall hangings, accessories and other aspects. Its origin, like Miao embroidery, can be traced back to the ancient tattoo custom of the Miao people. In the early 20th century, Liang Qiurui, a Miao from Baojing County, made a bold innovation and changed the Miao embroidery pattern draft to a drawing pattern draft, which was widely welcomed by Miao women. After several generations of Miao painters' continuous pioneering and innovation, the simple Miao painting has been developed from an embroidery draft to a valuable work of art. Miao painting has a long history and has an important value that cannot be underestimated in the study of the history, culture, production and life, commodity trade, folk beliefs, folk art, etc. of the Miao people. The theme of Xiangxi Miao painting is to reflect a festive and auspicious image of longevity and prosperity. The Miao paintings created by the Liang family mainly express dragons, phoenixes, flowers, grass, fish, shrimps, insects, birds, bamboo, wood, etc., and are matched with clan totem worship patterns, which well combine the tribal migration of ancient ancestors with the mountains, rivers, clouds, sun and moon, figures, buildings and legendary immortals and gods in nature. They use realism and abstraction, exaggeration and deformation, freedom and rigor to express, and then integrate their inner world and thoughts and feelings, so that Miao paintings have both primitive and passionate and romantic styles, achieving the harmonious unity of truth, goodness and beauty, reflecting the combination of classical art and modern art aesthetic pursuit, highlighting a very unique aesthetic value, and forming a unique cultural symbol of the Miao people in a unique living environment. The charm of Miao paintings lies in the fact that every pattern and every color combination contains rich cultural connotations, represents a certain historical record, and can give the Miao people a kind of spiritual comfort and satisfaction. It is an important part of recording the history and culture of the Miao people. The pictographic geometric patterns it expresses record the historical experiences of the Miao people and the secrets of their cultural admiration. This silent record combined with beautiful decoration has formed a wordless book under harsh conditions. It is also a carrier of the Miao people's spiritual thoughts and wisdom skills. At the same time, it is also a bridge for communicating feelings and a source of economic income. It also has cultural and artistic value. From the perspective of cultural anthropology, it is a precious ancient heritage; from the perspective of religious studies, it retains various spiritual symbols of ancient times such as nature worship, totem worship, ancestor worship and even sex worship, and is a precious "living fossil" for people to study the religious origins of ancient China; from the perspective of ethnology and folk crafts, it is a huge carrier that brings together rich elements of various links in craft production, providing first-hand information for studying the aesthetics of Miao crafts.
