China is the hometown of plum blossoms. Plum blossoms have been introduced, cultivated and applied since at least the Western Han Dynasty, and have a history of more than 2,000 years. In Chinese history, the custom of appreciating and singing plum blossoms is popular among the people, and there are a large number of poems and essays about plum blossoms. Plum blossom planting flourished in Nanjing during the Southern Dynasties, and the custom of appreciating plum blossoms has been passed down from generation to generation. According to historical records, Meihuawu at the foot of Zhongshan Mountain in the north of the city and Meilinggang in the south of the city are both good places for planting and appreciating plum blossoms. Meihua Mountain, located at the foot of Zhongshan Mountain, is an important "cultural space" for viewing and appreciating plum blossoms in Nanjing. Meihua Mountain covers an area of about 102 hectares, with more than 30,000 plum blossoms planted on the mountain, with more than 220 varieties. It is known as the "No. 1 Plum Mountain in the World". There is a "Plum Viewing Pavilion" on Meihua Mountain. Climb up the pavilion to view plum blossoms, and you can see the plum blossoms all over the mountain, which is refreshing. Nanjing has a long history of planting and appreciating plum blossoms among the people, which has lasted for six dynasties until now. The Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai wrote in his poem "New Linpu Blocked by Wind to a Friend": "Yesterday, the plum blossoms in Beihu were in full bloom; today, the willows at Baimen are already green on both sides of the road." Beihu is now Xuanwu Lake in Nanjing, where plum blossoms are planted, and the area is close to Zhongshan Mountain. Wang Anshi of the Northern Song Dynasty lived in Banshan Garden at the southern foot of Zhongshan Mountain in Nanjing, and wrote a poem titled "Plum Blossoms": "A few branches of plum blossoms in the corner of the wall, blooming alone in the cold; I know from afar that it is not snow, because of the subtle fragrance." Xu Wei of the late Ming Dynasty painted "Zhongshan Plum Blossoms", depicting the landscape of "Dragon Pan Scenic Spot, Ten Miles of Plum Blossoms in Spring Breeze". In the Ming Dynasty, Meihuawu under Zijin Mountain was a well-known plum blossom viewing spot. Gu Yanwu of the Ming Dynasty recorded in "Zhaoyu Zhi": "Meihuawu is in the southeast of (Linggu) Temple, and in spring, there are thousands of fragrant snow-covered plum blossoms." After the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum was built on Zhongshan Mountain in the early 1930s, people at that time opened "Sun Linggang" as the rose and tree area of the botanical garden of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum. Plum trees were planted on the mountain. On the eve of the Anti-Japanese War, it was already a flourishing scene of plum blossoms. Every spring, there was an endless stream of people admiring plum blossoms. After 1949, the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Administration Bureau planted a large number of plum blossoms on Meihua Mountain. In 1992, the plum planting area expanded to the east of Meihua Mountain, forming a plum garden with 10,000 plum trees. In 1982, Nanjing designated plum blossoms as the city flower. In 1995, Nanjing established the Plum Blossom Festival, which is held in February and March every year. The tradition of planting and appreciating plum blossoms in Nanjing has continued and has become a custom. Meihua Mountain is the place where popular cultural activities are concentrated and held regularly during the annual Nanjing Plum Blossom Festival. The custom of appreciating plum blossoms is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions and cultural history of Nanjing. It can play a positive role in the characteristics of folk culture and related community culture as a means to bring different groups of people and social groups closer together, promote the inheritance and dissemination of traditional plum blossom appreciation culture, and promote the reference and exchange of folk wisdom.
