The custom of appreciating plum blossoms in Nanjing is a folk custom item in the first batch of representative items of municipal intangible cultural heritage. China is the hometown of plum blossoms. Plum blossoms have been introduced, cultivated and applied at least in the Western Han Dynasty, and have a history of more than 2,000 years. In Chinese history, the custom of appreciating and chanting plum blossoms is popular among the people, and there are a large number of poems and essays chanting plum blossoms. Plum blossom planting flourished in Nanjing during the Southern Dynasties, and the custom of appreciating plum blossoms has been passed down from generation to generation. According to historical records, Meihuawu at the foot of Zhongshan Mountain in the north of the city and Meilinggang in the south of the city are both good places for planting and appreciating plum blossoms. Among the many places for appreciating plum blossoms in Nanjing today, Meihua Mountain, one of the four major plum gardens in China, is the best. Meihua Mountain is located at the southern foot of Zhongshan Mountain outside Zhongshan Gate in Xuanwu District, Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, with a total area of 1,533 acres. There are more than 30,000 plum blossoms planted on the mountain, with more than 220 varieties. It is known as the "No. 1 Plum Mountain in the World". There is a "Plum Viewing Pavilion" on Meihua Mountain. Climbing the pavilion to view plum blossoms, the plum blossoms are in full view, which is refreshing. For Nanjing, Meihua Mountain is an important "cultural space" for viewing and appreciating plum blossoms in history. It is a "cultural space" constructed by people of all generations. In 1982, Nanjing designated plum blossom as the city flower, and in 1995 established the "Plum Blossom Festival", which is held in February and March every year, continuing the traditional custom of planting and appreciating plum blossoms in Zhongshan area since ancient times. The custom of plum blossom appreciation is deeply rooted in Nanjing's cultural traditions and cultural history, and has played a positive role in the cohesion of folk cultural characteristics and related cultural communities, bringing different groups and social organizations closer together, contributing to the inheritance and dissemination of traditional plum blossom appreciation culture, and promoting the reference and exchange of folk wisdom.
