Hebei
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Plum blossom tune, commonly known as "drum touching string", is a kind of folk storytelling art spread in Zhao County. In rural areas, it is generally popular during the slack season of farming, or at markets, temple fairs, and street stalls. Some people also go to teahouses in cities to sing. Most of them are single-speakers, using only one drum and a crescent board. The band only uses three-string accompaniment. The lyrics are easy to understand, and the singing range is wide (more than four octaves). Because most of them are male voices, they sound thick, simple, gentle and pleasant, with rich expressiveness. They can sing short passages and long stories. It was a popular form of folk art at that time. "Plum blossom tune" has a long history and is a folk art with strong regional characteristics. It emerged in the Yuan Dynasty. The traditional repertoire "The Injustice of Dou E" was popular in southeastern Hebei. During the long practice, the accompaniment of plum blossom tune was added with sihu, erhu and yangqin, and the actors began to wear makeup. Because plum blossom tune has fewer people, less consumption and more convenient movement than opera, it has emerged with the advantages of free venue and free performance. It can be performed by one person in multiple roles, or in duet, round, singing in succession, and singing in unison. The music is crisp, the tone is beautiful and moving, and it is euphemistic and passionate. The national cultural department recognized it as a popular type of folk art in the Hebei, Shandong and Henan regions. It was gradually submerged by Henan Zhuizi in the 1960s, and gradually declined to the point where there was no successor by the end of the 1970s. Since the reform and opening up, in order to implement the party's literary and artistic guidelines, Zhao County Cultural Center has revisited old artists and sorted out and inherited plum blossom tune. Through decades of continuous efforts, a large number of plum blossom tune works have been created, which have been valued by provincial, municipal and central departments. Among them, excellent singing segments such as "Bone and Flesh Feelings" have been recorded as "Chinese Records". "Old Meanings and New Feelings" won the "Second Prize" in the Hebei Province Quyi Competition in 1985 and was broadcast on Hebei Radio. "Mountain Love Painting" won the "First Prize" in the Hebei Province Opera and Quyi Festival and Yanzhao Star Award Competition for the 80th Anniversary of the Founding of the Communist Party of China, and won the "Prosperity Award" in the 7th Shijiazhuang Art Festival in 2002.
