Fuling Playing Dragon
Playing with vegetable dragons was quite popular in Fuling during the Republic of China. According to legend, it originated from vegetable farmers celebrating the harvest of mustard tubers. The dragon is usually 7 or 9 sections long, with the dragon head made of paper, the longan made of big red oranges, the dragon body made of turnips, green vegetables, lotus white, carrots, etc., and the dragon treasure is made of a very large grapefruit. The dragon player wears a yellow shirt and green pants, a flower belt around his waist, a hat made of turnip leaves on his head, and straw sandals on his feet. The treasure holder is a clown dressed as a woman, wearing a flowery shirt and pants, embroidered shoes, a braid made of carrots behind his head, and earrings made of peppers. When playing with dragon lanterns, two large gongs and python trumpets lead the way, followed by the deacon team, the vegetable dragon, followed by the colorful flag team and the lantern team composed of turnips, radishes, cabbages, pumpkins, etc., and finally the pole-beating team holding sugarcanes and the gong and drum team. On the street, people play various tricks such as "dragon raising its head", "Guanyin sitting on a lotus platform", "water waves", "worshipping all directions", and "lying dragon". In addition, there are a number of small vegetable dragons (made by tying vegetable heads and leaves on a bench), or "rotating and turning over", or "posing eight characters", or "piercing the mother's belly", "jumping on the dragon's back" and so on. The scene is very spectacular when they cooperate with the big vegetable dragon. Information source: Tourism Bureau (no pictures at the moment, welcome to provide.)
