Yifang Fire Festival

🎧  Listen to Introduction

The festival is held in Yifang Village, Hongdun Town, on the 26th day of the eighth lunar month every year. During the day, the young and strong men with good fortune start to "dance the Dong" (it is said that they are possessed by the "Tian Gong Marshal" they believe in). At this time, they can be "invulnerable to water and fire, and invulnerable to knives". They can use a silver needle to penetrate from one cheek to the other, and use a rope to hang a round iron ball covered with sharp iron nails to hit the bare-chested body without breaking the skin or bleeding. At night, dozens of meters of charcoal are spread on the open ground and burned red, and the altar for "dance the Dong" begins again. After Tian Gong Marshal "possessing" the body, he performs needle piercing the cheek, hitting the iron ball, etc., and then runs barefoot over the red-hot charcoal. After the "Dance the Dong" run, other men, young and old, can also run barefoot over the charcoal, and no one feels hot, and no one's feet are burned. This is "overfire". After the "fire-passing" is over, people go to the Tian Gong Marshal Temple and set up an altar to "dance the Dong", and then people pray to the "Dance the Dong" performers, praying for safety, children, business success, admission to university, etc. The "Dance the Dong" performers also treat people's illnesses, prescribing medicine and drawing magic symbols, which are said to be very effective. Some ethnic minorities in southwest my country also have activities similar to the Yifang "fire-passing" festival, but whether there is an internal connection between them remains to be explored and studied. In 2007, the Yifang "fire-passing" festival was included in the second batch of Nanping City's list of representative works of municipal intangible cultural heritage.
