🎧  Listen to Introduction

Tujia Sheba Day is a unique festival of the Tujia people and a unique intangible cultural heritage protection project in Hunan Province. "Sheba" means "waving hands" and "Ri" means "doing". In Tujia language, the subject and object are reversed. "Sheba Day" is literally translated into "doing waving hands" in Chinese, and translated into "waving hand dance". Tujia Sheba Day is an activity of sacrifice and prayer for the Miao and Tujia people. It is usually held during the New Year and has developed into a comprehensive folk activity such as sacrifice, prayer, singing and dancing, socializing, sports competitions, and material exchanges. Tujia Sheba Day has a strong sacrificial color, with songs and dances, and dances named after songs. It is said that the waving hand dance originated from the ancient Bayu dance, which is an ancient war dance that began in ancient times and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Sheba is divided into single waving, double waving, big waving hands, and small waving hands. There is no limit on the number of people dancing the waving hand dance, with tens of thousands and hundreds of people. When waving hands, the rhythm is echoed by the sound of gongs and drums, which is magnificent and touching. The main feature is that the hands and feet move on the same side, moving forward and backward gracefully, in pairs, with a distinct and vivid rhythm. The hand-waving song is tens of thousands of lines long and can be called a Tujia epic. There are big and small "hand-waving" on Sheba Day. The "big hand-waving" is held every three to five years. The "big hand-waving" is large in scale, with many sets and a long time, lasting seven or eight days. It is held in front of the "hand-waving hall" together with market trade, cultural and sports activities. The "hand-waving hall" is in the Tuwang Temple. The "small hand-waving" is small in scale, with few sets, generally one to three days, and is mostly held in the clan's ancestral hall. In the hand-waving activity, the Tujia people recall the hardships of their ancestors' entrepreneurship, remember their ancestors' achievements, and show the life scenes of the Tujia ancestors. The whole activity is full of traces of ancestor worship. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
