Riding in a sedan chair
In the past, girls in Shayang had to ride in a sedan chair when they got married. In a society where men are superior to women, the only day a woman is honored in her life is when she gets married to her husband's family, so riding in a sedan chair is the most glorious day for them. Before riding in a sedan chair, they have to "open their faces". Two young, pretty and knowledgeable daughters-in-law are selected to help the married woman pull out the visible sweat hair on her face and neck with thread, and pull her eyebrows into a crescent moon shape, and quietly tell her some physiological knowledge. Before the face is opened, she is called "hairy girl", and after the face is opened, she is called "new girl". Then they start to "put on the hair", that is, comb and wash the hair, arrange the hairstyle, and put on ornaments, so that she looks charming and radiant. The sedan chair is covered with red and decorated with red. The sedan chair for marriage is carried by two people, and another two people take turns. The bride is mostly dressed in red, with a red coat and a red skirt. There are two bronze mirrors tied around her waist, which are small in front and large in the back. They are called "evil-avoiding mirrors" or "demon-subduing mirrors", which means turning misfortune into good fortune, avoiding evil and ensuring safety. In front and behind the bridal sedan, there are "seated escorts" with two large banknotes, two lanterns, and suonas, playing music all the way, making the scene very lively. Before the daughter gets on the sedan, the mother gives her some money wrapped in red paper, which is called "sealing money" so that she can entertain at any time. The girl sits in the sedan with a "red cap" on her head. On the way, when crossing a ditch or a river, she must throw coins into the sedan. When the sedan bearers hear the sound, they know that money has been rewarded. If they do not hear the sound, the sedan bearers will deliberately bump the sedan, and the bride will feel like she is on the surging waves, which is very uncomfortable. When the sedan bearers hear the sound of the coins, they know that there is a reward and will change to a rhythmic slow pace. The well-behaved girl will also hold the coin and knock on the bottom of the sedan to make it ring, so as to tease the sedan bearers to lift the sedan. When she arrives at her husband's house, after getting off the sedan, two women will lead the bride and groom to worship in the hall, drink the wedding cup tea, and enter the bridal chamber. This is called "pulling the relatives". After the bride got off the sedan chair, the bearers collected the reward money from the sedan chair and divided it equally among themselves before going into the house to rest. Nowadays, riding in a sedan chair has become popular again and has become a scene in urban and rural weddings. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
