🎧  Listen to Introduction

Among the folk activities of the Lantern Festival in Taigu, there is an activity called "strangling the live dragon". This activity is to set up two "dragon sheds" several feet apart on the flat ground, connected by several large ropes in the middle, and hang the dragon lantern on the ropes. In the two "dragon sheds", the ropes are twisted with a winch, and the dragon lantern will fly left and right on the middle rope and tumble up and down. Every time this kind of community fire activity is held, it always attracts thousands of spectators. How did this folk community fire activity come about? Legend has it that during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, there was a man named Tian in Tianjiahou Village (also known as Yanghou Village) in Taigu who was doing business in Guangzhou. Because of his prosperous business, he became a local celebrity. This man and the owners and shopkeepers of several famous shops in Guangzhou, in order to seek good luck and prosperity, would hire local folk artists to "strangling the live dragon" on the second day of the second lunar month every year when the dragon raises its head. When Tian retired and returned to his hometown, he brought this activity back to Taigu. Since then, there has been a "strangling the live dragon" activity in Tianjiahou Street in Taigu City. This kind of activity was held on the second day of the second lunar month every year, and later became a social activity during the Lantern Festival. "Jiaohuolong" is a traditional cultural activity in Tianjiahou Village. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
