🎧  Listen to Introduction

It is said that the Taiping drum of Yuewangtai was a drum-beating and gong-beating activity organized by the Han Dynasty Minyue King Zhu to celebrate the victory of the resistance against the enemy and maintain peace. Later, it was carried out every year in the first month of the lunar calendar to welcome the Buddha, to wish for good weather and a peaceful year. Due to the large scale and difficulty of practice, this activity has been interrupted for a long time. It was not until 1995 that when excavating the cultural heritage of Wangtai, according to the proposal of Wangtai villagers, the town cultural station organized personnel to collect the drum music teaching aids scattered among the people, sorted and processed them, and hired folk artists to teach drum skills, and re-established the Taiping drum team. Basic content: The Taiping drum consists of four big drums, twenty (up to 40) small drums, eleven battle flags, and three pairs of cymbals (up to 20 gongs). The big drum is 80 cm high and 60 cm in diameter, and can only be placed on the ground for beating. In order to facilitate marching performances, the small drum is carried on the shoulder. The drummers wear yellow clothes and yellow pants, which symbolize armor, with breastplates on their chests and belts on their waists. The formation is a square formation, with four big drums arranged in a straight line from east to west, facing the small drum team; the small drum team is in four rows on the west; and flags are arranged on the north and south sides. The formation changes constantly, sometimes in the shape of Bagua, or in the shape of a lotus, with endless changes, which is dazzling. The whole scene is full of cymbals and drums, and flags are flying, which is spectacular. It is both inspiring and gives people the enjoyment of artistic beauty. The Wangtai Taiping Drum Team has a long history, which can be traced back to the Tang and Five Dynasties more than a thousand years ago. There are the following basic characteristics: 1. Dependence on folk customs; 2. Extensive content of activities; 3. Unique performance style; 4. Flexible and active activity forms; 5. Artistry of performance forms; 6. Sense of the times and historicity; 7. National imitation; 8. Performance of drums to vibrate the festival.
