Xinchang Diaoqiang is one of the ancient opera vocal styles, also known as Diaoqiang, Shaoxing Gaodiao, and Xinchang Gaodiao. It is centered in Xinchang and spread to Shaoxing, Xiaoshan, Shangyu, Yuyao, Shengxian, Ninghai and other places in eastern Zhejiang. It is considered to be the only remnant of Yuyaoqiang, one of the "four major vocal styles" of southern opera in the Ming Dynasty. In the early Qing Dynasty, Xinchang Diaoqiang entered its heyday and spread to all directions with Hangzhou as the center. Xinchang Diaoqiang has a rich repertoire, including various repertoires derived from Mulian Opera, Southern Opera, Yuan Zaju, and Ming and Qing legends, as well as historical story dramas and modern dramas newly compiled in modern times. In the art archives of Diaoqiang, there are 159 manuscripts of ancient dramas preserved before the late Qing Dynasty. Among them, "Northern West Chamber", "Han Palace Autumn", "Makeup Box Records" and other repertoires belonging to Yuan Zaju are unique to Diaoqiang and extremely precious. Xinchang Diaoqiang Troupe is the only art group in the country that can perform "Northern West Chamber", and its performance of "Han Palace Autumn" can also maintain the original appearance of Yuan opera. Diaoqiang Mulian Opera occupies an important position in the Mulian Opera system of my country. Among the 167 Diaoqiang Mulian Operas, as many as 72 are not available in other operas. Diaoqiang singing includes dry singing, chorus, overlapping boards, etc., and often uses a word or number of chorus at the end of each sentence, or repeats the last few words of the sentence with different melodies one beat later; the chorus is purely human voice, and the melody of each sentence tends to gradually decline. Diaoqiang does not use orchestral accompaniment, but only percussion instruments to cooperate with the performance. Later, due to the influence of Kunqu Opera and Luantan, flute and banhu accompaniment were used in a few excerpts. The accompaniment band of Diaoqiang is extremely simple, consisting of only 6 people, responsible for the performance of drums, small gongs, etc. The roles of Diaoqiang are called "three flowers, four whites, and five dantang". The three flowers are big painted face, two painted face, and small painted face. The four whites are old male, main male, deputy male, and young male. The five dantang are old female, main female, tie female, small female, and five female. Its performance is known for its exquisiteness and delicacy, including stunts such as holding a chair, holding a candle, and kicking boots with the back. Xinchang is located in the mountainous area of eastern Zhejiang, and the environment is relatively closed, so the tiaoqiang has been preserved in this corner. In the "wind gun combination" of tiaoqiang Sanqu, the remnants of "stepping songs" in the Tang Dynasty and "turning and stepping" in the Song Dynasty can still be found, which is of great significance for the study of ancient opera and music. Tiaoqiang has deeply influenced the surrounding operas. Ninghai Pingdiao is its branch. Local operas such as Yue Opera, Taizhou Luantan, Rui'an Gaoqiang, and Shao Opera have also been nourished by its repertoire, voice and performance. Frequent wars in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, coupled with the continuous rise of new operas, Xinchang tiaoqiang has declined. At present, tiaoqiang opera is affected by social changes and is in an endangered state. The troupe is short of funds, and the performing artists are in a serious gap. Only by taking effective measures in time can this opera continue to survive.
