The legend of the Pearl Tower is a folk literature project in the fourth batch of representative projects of Suzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. The legend of the Pearl Tower, with Tongli as the center, gradually spread to the surrounding towns such as Songling, Jinjiaba, Beiku, Lili, Xinta, Pingwang and Shengze; and then expanded to Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhujiajiao, Qingpu in Shanghai, Jiashan, Jiaxing, Huzhou and Hangzhou in Zhejiang. Tongli is a famous historical and cultural ancient town, surrounded by lakes and rivers, rich in products and prosperous economy, "especially famous families, Confucian scholars and officials, and gentlemen". Legend has it that there was a censor named Chen in Tongli Town. After his original wife passed away, he married Fang. Fang's maiden family was in Xiaoxiang Village, east of Tongli Lake. She was not from an official family, so marrying into the Chen family was considered marrying up. Later, she had a daughter named Cui'e. Fang had a nephew named Fang Qing. Although his family was poor, he studied hard and was very talented. When Censor Chen celebrated his 50th birthday, all his relatives and friends came to celebrate and give him gifts. Fang Qing also went to pay his respects. Seeing that his clothes were shabby and he lost face for his family, his aunt refused to acknowledge him as her nephew. After Fang Qing begged her repeatedly, her aunt finally acknowledged her nephew. Fang Qing wanted to go to Beijing to take the imperial examination and borrowed some money from her aunt. Not only did her aunt not lend it, she also ridiculed Fang Qing. After being humiliated by her aunt, Fang Qing had no interest in the banquet and fled back home from the back garden. Cousin Chen Cui'e knew that Fang Qing's family was poor, so she gave him a bag of "dry snacks". This "dry snack" was the Pearl Tower. Three years later, Fang Qing won the first place in the imperial examination and came to his aunt's house in disguise. He tried to sing a song to express his feelings, hoping that he would come to his senses. At first, the aunt was hard to change her nature, and then she was ashamed, and finally the aunt and nephew reconciled. In addition, stories such as "Jiusong Pavilion as Matchmaker for Engagement", "The Robber's Kind Heart", "Dingxiang Plate", and "Fang Qing Wubu Ye" have also evolved. The legend of the Pearl Tower is rich in content and has a tortuous plot. It is very close to the lives of the people and has a great influence. It has been adapted into tanci, Shanghai beach spring and "Changxi Opera", and later adapted into Yue Opera, Huangmei Opera and Huai Opera, etc. There are also Xuanjuan "Pearl Tower" and folk song "Twelve Months Flower Named Pearl Tower", which have extremely high literary and artistic value. The legend of the Pearl Tower reflects the traditional Chinese ethical and moral concepts. Due to the ups and downs of the story and the full and vivid characters, it is entertaining and educational, and has played a good role in moral education. Many people and things in the legend have existed in history, such as Chen Yushi. According to historical records, Chen Wangdao (1526-1576), a censor in the Ming Dynasty, whose courtesy name was Mengfu, was from Tongli. The stone memorial archway in front of his house is engraved with the words "Established by Chen Wangdao, the Censor of Nanjing Road in the Gengchen Year of the Wanli Period of the Ming Dynasty (1580)". After Chen Wangdao's death, he was buried in Jituo Village, Tongli. The "Chen Family Tree" also records that his second wife's surname was Fang and they had a daughter. The "Nine Pine Pavilion" and "Baiyun Temple" mentioned in the legend of the Pearl Pagoda all have relics in Tongli, and the old house of Censor Chen is also left. In the early 20th century, a dowry book for a married girl was found among Chen's old belongings, which recorded "a Pearl Pagoda". How the extremely concise people and events recorded in history books have become vivid and interesting folk legends after hundreds of years of interpretation and processing is of value in literary and artistic research.
