In the middle and late Qing Dynasty, a kind of gongs and drums played mainly with "Xintang" (tanggongs and drums) emerged in the Matang area of Rudong. With the development of the times, Matang gongs and drums have developed from single gongs and single drums to double gongs and double drums, multiple gongs and multiple drums; from the initial four or five people to multiple people playing together; from the initial "Xin" and "tang" to the combination of gongs, boards, cymbals, tanggongs, tang drums, single-skin drums and other percussion instruments. The music is simple, the rhythm is brisk, the rhythm is beautiful, the ups and downs are orderly, and the changes are diverse, with strong regional artistic characteristics. Matang gongs and drums were popularized in the late Qing Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty. Folk artists gradually combined percussion instruments and plucked instruments according to the melody of Matang gongs and drums, which amplified the performance effect. Later, wind instruments were added, and the melody became richer and more widely spread. Matang gongs and drums developed during the Anti-Japanese War and flourished in the early days of the founding of New China when "gongs and drums were played in every village to celebrate the liberation". At that time, there were more than ten teams playing Matang gongs and drums, with more than a hundred performers.
