Yungang Gong and Drum
Yungang Grand Gong and Drum (also known as Yunsheng Gong and Drum) is a kind of gong and drum art that is popular in northern Shanxi. Among them, the gong and drum team of Yongxing Village, Yuanping City is the most famous. As early as the 16th cave of the Yungang Grottoes excavated in the Northern Wei Dynasty, there was an image of a gong and drum band holding small cymbals, which shows that small cymbals were already popular among the people at that time. Historically, there were frequent wars in the northern Shanxi plateau. This type of music was often used to welcome the triumphant return of soldiers. After the war, it was mainly used for folk festivals. By the Republic of China, it had declined. After the reform and opening up, its inheritors Xing Mingxuan and Zhang Linyu vigorously inherited it and led the team to perform frequently at home and abroad, winning great reputation. In 1997, after listening to the recording of this type of music, Mr. Lv Ji compared it to the "Chinese Gong and Drum Symphony". Yungang Grand Gong and Drum has a rich repertoire, with 133 pieces in existence and 37 unique conducting methods. The difference between it and other gongs and drums in my country is that for the repertoires above the second level from the first to the third fret, the performers only use their fingers to hit the drums, and all kinds of instruments have unique skills in the mandarin duck playing method. Old artists said: "The performance of the instrument of the Jinbei gong and drum is that the drum is the king, symbolizing the bones; the small cymbals are the queen, and the small gong is the tongue. The two work closely together and play the role of tendons and blood; the big cymbals are the skin and flesh, and the gong is an embellishment and plays an auxiliary role; the wooden fish symbolizes the eyebrows and eyes, and the whip conductor is the soul, which makes a complete person." Yungang gongs and drums not only vividly express the life interest of the people in northern Shanxi, but also reflect many historical features. It has a high artistic research value. However, in recent years, due to the scattering of various materials among the people and the inability to collect them, this folk art form has been covered in dust in the countryside and urgently needs to be rescued and protected. This project is the second batch of provincial projects and the third batch of national expansion projects.
