Nanhua Temple is located 6 kilometers southeast of Maba Town, Qujiang District, Shaoguan City, northern Guangdong. Nanhua Birthday Fair is a folk activity held every year in Nanhua Temple, also known as the "Sixth Patriarch Birthday" Fair. It is a fair held to commemorate the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, the founder of the Southern Zen School of Buddhism. The specific time is the eighth day of the second lunar month and the third day of the eighth lunar month every year. It began in the second year of Kaiyuan in the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (714 AD), and has a history of more than 1,290 years. The night before the Nanhua Birthday Fair, the masters and believers gathered in the Great Hall to consecrate and commemorate the Sixth Patriarch. The morning worship began at 3:30 in the morning of the fair. At about 8 o'clock, the believers entered the hall in a line to worship Buddha and ancestors. At noon, the host and the lay Buddhists held a vegetarian feast to pray for blessings and eliminate disasters, plant blessings, and make good connections. The believers had lunch in the vegetarian hall. The masters gathered in the main hall to offer sacrifices. After lunch, all the masters gathered in front of the main hall to hold a ritual of releasing animals. The last procedure was to pass on the lanterns, and the temple fair ended in the flames symbolizing wisdom. Since the Tang Dynasty, the Nanhua Festival temple fair has been passed down from generation to generation and has been enriched to form its own characteristics and scale, and gradually developed into an important festival of the Southern Zen Sect of "Chinese Buddhism". The content of the temple fair has gone through a historical development process from commemorating the Sixth Patriarch Huineng to promoting the Chinese Buddhist Zen thought, and has made important contributions to Chinese Buddhism and even the history of Buddhist development. Not only that, the Nanhua Festival temple fair also provides a platform for believers to display various folk arts, so that various folk arts can be preserved and developed. The celebration, commemoration and Zen cultural radiation contained in the Nanhua Festival temple fair have made the Buddhist Zen culture with Chinese characteristics recognized and returned to the sect by believers all over the world, fully reflecting the profoundness and vitality of Zen culture, and has high historical and cultural value. Due to historical reasons, Nanhua Temple was once severely damaged and the Nanhua Birthday Temple Fair was also severely impacted. Currently, the scale and influence of the temple fair activities are far less than before. We must take effective measures to increase protection efforts.
