Circus lights
Circus lanterns, also known as bamboo horse lanterns, horse lantern dance, and small horse lanterns in ancient times. Originated from Huajiahu Community, Maoji Experimental Zone, Huainan City, in the Huaihe River Basin, this project uses the scene of arranging troops on the battlefield as the material. After artistic processing by folk artists, prop horses are made of bamboo strips and colored cloth. Performers tie the prop horses around their waists, fully dressed, and go into battle, accompanied by gongs and drums. They perform on the stage according to the designed formation diagram. In addition to running formations, the actors also perform battlefield fighting, with rap, recitation, and jingles. Legend has it that there are 72 formations in this lantern dance, and 22 formations have been excavated and sorted out. Because this lantern dance is based on the cavalry formations on the ancient battlefield, the whole scene is full of flying flags, gongs and drums, neighing horses, and triumphant songs. It is magnificent and popular among the people. It has been widely circulated among the people for hundreds of years, and has spread to Panji, Shouxian, Huaiyuan, and even Jiangsu, Henan, and Shanxi in the Huaihe River Basin. This lantern dance has both unique folk dance art and the strong patriotism of the Chinese nation.
