🎧  Listen to Introduction

The car lantern is also called "dou meimei" and "pao lanchuan". It is mainly performed around the Spring Festival. There are 3 performers, 1 plays the role of meimei, 1 plays the role of a clown, and 1 plays the role of a driver or boatman. There are also 7 performers, in addition to the above 3 people, 4 "reporters" (beaters) holding lanterns are added. The lantern team is led by old artists with high performing skills in the countryside, and some people who love to play with lanterns are connected to form a temporary "car lantern" team. During the Spring Festival, they play with lanterns everywhere and disband as soon as the Spring Festival is over. The performance of "car lantern" starts with the clown holding a flower folding fan and running around to tease the meimei (mostly men) who sits on a "float", wears sunglasses, and dances with a colorful scarf. Then they improvise and sing various humorous words related to festivals, farming, and folk customs, mainly for humor and fun. The meimei holds the edge of the car in the car and makes forward and backward swaying movements with the lyrics, with a shy and coy look on her face. The driver or boatman adjusts the rhythm to the tune and pushes the cart and rows the boat. After the little clown leads the singing, others join in the singing. After each section, they change their formation by performing traditional routines such as "Turning the Ingot", "Pulling the Ant", and "Sifting the Lotus" to the sound of gongs and drums. Its performance skills can be summarized as "the little sister should be steady, and the clown should be funny". The singing section has two parts: super-tune and count-tune. The lyrics are mostly structured in upper and lower parts, with rhymes in every sentence, and most of them are 7-character sentences. They often have additional words and embedded words. The singing style is micro-tune, and the tune is repeated. The accompanying instruments include erhu, yueqin, sanyue, sihu, gongs, drums, four panels, etc. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
