Sheet Play
Hundreds of years ago, a peculiar puppet show called Bedsheet Play appeared in Sichuan. It is a one-person puppet show, also called Back-carrying Play, named because the curtain covers the performer like a bed sheet. This is a puppet show with a plot performed by one person. The performer hides behind the scenes, only letting the puppet meet the audience. The performer's hands can constantly change the puppet roles, and the performer also beats gongs and drums with his feet. He holds a whistle in his mouth and constantly changes the tone to dub each puppet role. The puppets performing Bedsheet Play include glove puppets and Chengdu Jingmu puppets. Bedsheet Play is a troupe with one person, also known as "one-person troupe". People like this puppet show very much, especially children, who are familiar with every character in the play. The most famous programs are: "Brother Beats the Tiger", "Pig Bajie Worships the Hall", "Jingyanggang", etc. Wherever this street art goes, there is laughter and joy. Bedsheet Play is mainly performed in the old Sichuan teahouses and streets and alleys in the western Sichuan plain and southern and northern Sichuan. Chengdu is an ancient cultural city with a long history. Chengdu is located in the western part of Sichuan Basin, 192 kilometers long from east to west, 166 kilometers wide from north to south, with an area of 12,389.6 square kilometers, of which plains account for 40.1%, with an average altitude of 500 meters. Chengdu's climate belongs to the mid-tropical humid monsoon climate, warm and humid all year round, with distinct four seasons. There are many rivers in the territory, such as Tuojiang River, Minjiang River, and Qingyi River, crisscrossing the entire territory, with more than 40 large and small rivers. The good natural environment conditions make Chengdu rich in natural resources, including 46 species of national key protected plants such as ginkgo, silver fir, sycamore, and metasequoia, 24 species of national key protected animals such as giant pandas, golden monkeys, and wildebeests, and fruit trees, tea trees and Chinese herbal medicine resources are also quite rich. Bed sheet drama is a performance method for folk artists to make a living by performing. It is often seen in the streets and alleys of old Chengdu, but now this traditional folk drama performance is almost invisible. The history of sheet drama is very long. As early as the Tang Dynasty, there were records of puppet performances. Volume 3 of Beimeng Suoyan, a note by Sun Bangxian of the Song Dynasty, said: "Tang Cui Dai Zhong'an was stationed in Xichuan. He often played puppets in front of the envoy's house. Soldiers and civilians went through the house to watch without any prohibition." In the Bingwu year of Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty, the folk painter Qian Liancheng painted a silk painting of Chengdu city people "The Art of Dust". There is a picture of sheet drama being performed in an alley. During the Xuantong period of the Qing Dynasty, "Chengdu General View" edited by Fu Chongju published a picture of sheet drama performances, with a note: "Every performance must have a section of "Beating the Tiger", and children are happy to watch it." It was very popular in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. There were often scenes of people watching sheet drama on the streets of old Chengdu. Sheet drama is actually a "wooden elbow elbow" drama performed by one person, including glove puppets and small stick puppets. During the performance, the two feet hit the musical instruments, and the five bodies are used together. The gongs and drums are loud and lively. One person forms a troupe, also known as a "one-person troupe". The stage and props can be carried on a shoulder pole, and are controlled by one person from beginning to end. The sheet opera has its own unique singing style, which is highly expressive, simple and natural, with a primitive artistic style. Its performance form is unique, with one person taking charge of all the performances and controlling it from beginning to end. It can even show a huge army, with exaggerated modeling and movements, funny and interesting, and swordplay, which is better than real people or other types of puppets. The sheet opera is well-known far and wide, and has a far-reaching influence abroad. Its unique artistic expression form has been unanimously affirmed by Chinese and foreign experts and scholars. It has visited dozens of countries and regions such as Germany, the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Malaysia. It has been invited by foreign folk associations to Switzerland, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia and other places for cultural exchanges. Many important TV stations in China and abroad have shot special programs, and many domestic and foreign newspapers and magazines have introduced the sheet opera dozens of times.
