Nanjian Miao costumes

The traditional Miao costumes in Nanjian are all made of multi-colored hemp thread. The most novel thing about Miao costumes is the women's headdress. Miao girls are used to wearing a horn-shaped bun on the top of their heads, and the bun is braided on the left or right. Gauze and silk ribbons are often used to tie the hair. Different Miao branches use different colors and patterns of gauze and silk. Some also wear silver collars with "hundred-family locks". Married women usually braid their hair and wrap the braids along the edge of the top of the head, and often use a crescent-shaped comb to insert it into the top of the hair. Among the Miao people, women's headdresses are particularly special. Whenever there is a happy event, they will tie their hair into a spiral-shaped bun, using a longer blue or black cloth, folded vertically into a long strip, and tightly coiled from one end on a top hat base that suits their head shape. On the outermost surface of the folded bun, there are horizontal strips of stacked ribbons, nailed with 32-48 shell carvings, closely embellished with cross-shaped bright threads, 10 small silver chains about 5 cm long, and several strings of small silver bells. In addition to the exquisite headdress, the tops and bottoms of Miao women are quite distinctive. The tops include plain clothes and formal clothes, and the bottoms include various pleated skirts, with peach blossom waistbands or beard belts tied around the waist. Some also have exquisite and unique short coats, as well as exquisite sleeveless cloth jackets, and cloth sandals with colorful embroidery and edging. Among the various Miao costumes, the most prominent feature is that no matter the size of the clothes, no matter the tops and bottoms, the collars, cuffs, skirt edges, and skirt bottoms are all inlaid with wax-dyed patterns and "rice"-shaped pattern banners. The Miao people have a special interest in wearing the clothes they embroidered, especially those girls who are about to get married or the brides who have already married, they will dress themselves up to be beautiful and charming, and they also cherish their beautiful clothes like a treasure. The clothes of Miao men are simpler than those of women. The top is a short coat with a front opening, and the bottom is trousers, usually shorts. The headdress is mostly a hemispherical cloth hat or a small green bun with the hair exposed, but all of them have exquisite colorful embroidered edges. The most distinctive feature of Miao clothing is the extensive use of ornaments and embroidery.
