The Sheep and Horse Festival of the Miao Nationality in Xiushan, also known as the "Miao Family May Year", is named because the main festival days are in the earthly branches of the lunar calendar, which belong to Wu (horse) and Mo (sheep). It is mainly spread in Shidi Town, Liren Town, Longchi Town and other places in Xiushan County, among which Shidi Baoan Village is the most representative. The inheritance of the Sheep and Horse Festival has gone through more than 18 generations. Because it is passed down by word of mouth and by word of mouth, there is no record of the inheritance genealogy. Baoan Village, Shidi Town, is the main inheritance place of the Miao people's "Sheep and Horse Festival". The local Miao customs are mellow and the folk culture is colorful. The formation of the Sheep and Horse Festival originated from the wars and migrations of the local Miao ancestors, and it has a history of more than 600 years. Since the early Qing Dynasty, in addition to retaining the original theme of "repaying gratitude", the celebration of the Sheep and Horse Festival has gradually added "ancestor worship", and the sacrificial activities have begun to take shape. By the middle of the Qing Dynasty, various folk arts, handicrafts and Miao cuisine were gathered together and began to be celebrated as a "New Year Festival", so it was also called "Miao May Year". This grand occasion lasted until the early years of the Republic of China. Because the festival has a large-scale sacrificial ceremony, it was suppressed by the New Culture Movement during the period of destroying the four olds after the founding of New China, and it became depressed year by year and even disappeared for a time. The Sheep and Horse Festival is mainly based on "reporting the God of Vegetables" and "reporting the God of Sheep and Horses". It is named because the main time of the festival is the first noon (horse) day and the first Wei (sheep) day after the 26th day of the fourth lunar month. In the initial stage, the procedures for holding the Sheep and Horse Festival were relatively simple, and the main form was the gathering of Miao people. Every year on the 26th day of the fourth lunar month, the Miao people first hold the "reporting the God of Vegetables" ceremony with the theme of repaying the life-saving grace of fruits and vegetables. Subsequently, according to my country's traditional calendar, the first two days of the earthly branches after the 26th day of the fourth lunar month, which belong to the Horse and the Sheep, were designated as the days to "repay the Sheep and Horse God" in order to repay the Sheep and Horse for saving their lives. On May 24, 2021, the Xiushan Miao Sheep and Horse Festival, which was applied for by Xiushan Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, Chongqing, was approved by the State Council to be included in the fifth batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative projects.
