🎧  Listen to Introduction

There are four common types of Miao costumes in Xixiu District, Anshun County, Guizhou Province: one is that women wear a half-moon-shaped mahogany comb on their heads, and their hair is wrapped in a bun on the comb with a silver chain around it. The two lapels of their tops are crossed together, and they wear long skirts with hemp or brocade belts around their waists. Their aprons are mostly bordered with batik or embroidery. The second is that women wear a bun with blue batik-bordered cloth folded into a pointed top. Their costumes are mostly indigo-colored, decorated with colorful lace. There are two white lace on the lapels, and during festivals, the lace is replaced with brightly colored edges, with various flower and bird patterns embroidered or dyed on them. They wear pleated skirts that are longer than the knees, with lace on the hems, and blue cloth belts wrapped around their calves. The third is that women use a bamboo piece tied with a small wooden comb to obliquely insert it into their buns, and then wrap the remaining long hair and wigs around the combs. The clothing is a short blouse with a slanting opening, usually in cyan, blue or dark blue, with lace trims on the cuffs and collar. On festive occasions or other festivals, colorful clothes are worn, mostly red, with a skirt that reaches the heels, cyan and blue or cyan and white, with a brocade waist and a white apron. The fourth type is women who wear a bun, with batik cloth as an arch bridge-shaped exterior decoration, a silver hairpin on the forehead, a short blouse with a slanting opening on the upper body, and floral fabric trims on the sleeves and collar, and a cyan and white or blue and white batik pleated skirt on the lower body, with a floral belt apron tied around the waist.
