Miao paper-cutting is commonly known as "Miao flower paper", "cut flowers" and "embroidered paper". It is called "Xigegang" and "Xigebang" in Miao language, and means "animal paper-cutting" and "flower paper-cutting" in Chinese. Miao paper-cutting circulated in Jianhe County, Guizhou Province can be divided into two types: Gedong type and Xinmin and Xinhe type, with different styles. Gedong type paper-cutting has a full composition and rich content. The patterns are mostly animals, flowers and people, including images from myths and legends; Xinmin and Xinhe type paper-cutting is relatively flexible in composition, and the patterns are mostly flowers, birds and butterflies in nature, with vivid shapes. Miao paper-cutting has a long history. There is a description of paper-cutting in the section "Miao Ancient Songs of Crossing Mountains and Rivers" sung by the Miao people in Southeast Guizhou from generation to generation. It is a precious visual material for studying the history and living customs of the Miao people in the upper reaches of the Qingshui River in Jianhe County. The descriptions of the two-headed dragon, two-headed bird, two-headed snake, and two-bodied dragon with two heads and two bodies are actually an extension of a witchcraft ritual in the Miao "eating Guzang" ceremony, which has extremely high historical and ethnological research value. Jianhe Miao paper-cutting is divided into Gedong type, Xinmin type, and Xinhe type. The Gedong type is mainly distributed in Wuhe, Wucha, Liye, Zhangtianxi, Wengliu, Wengying, Nanxiang, Jianxin, Nanxi, Bailong, Zhangwu, Baogongtun, Lazi, Yangmen, Ganshao, Ganweng, Nanhao, Guangtiao, Xibei, Mali, Xiaomali, Wubei, Wengxiu, Qianjin, Dongnan, Fanglongtang, Zhangjiazhai, Wangjiazhai in Gedong Town, Jianhe, Pingjia, Shangxiawumen, Wujiaduo, Shangyanzhai, Tangjiao, Yangping, Jiaojie and other 35 Miao villages; Xinmin and Xinhe types are mainly distributed in Xinmin and Xinhe villages in Guanmo Township, Jianhe, and Duimenzhai in Censong Town. Jianhe Miao paper-cutting is the base pattern and blueprint of Miao embroidery in Gedong, Censong, Xinmin, Xinhe and other places. After the second processing, its artistry is enriched and extended in embroidery. In this sense, paper-cutting is also an important part of Miao embroidery and clothing. Miao paper-cutting patterns are simple, bizarre, full of romance, and the works are rich and colorful. There are as many as twelve kinds of Miao costumes in Jianhe, but not all embroidery patterns of Miao costumes need to use paper-cutting as the blueprint for embroidery. Only some embroidery patterns of Miao costumes in the three towns of Gedong, Censong and Guanmo need to use paper-cutting as the blueprint for embroidery. Therefore, the differences in paper-cutting can be observed from the differences in costumes. Embroidery made by paper-cutting is mostly used for embroidering waist, shoulder flowers, and the main part of the waist around the front. The many animals, people, plants and natural objects created by the Miao paper-cutting in Jianhe are full of wonderful fantasies and many mysterious concepts, exuding a strong primitive wildness, with similar characteristics to ancient primitive art, which is rare among all ethnic groups in my country. With the increasing number of local women working outside Jianhe every year, the number of people depicting and making Miao paper-cutting is decreasing, and most of them are older women who stay at home to engage in paper-cutting activities. As the times progress and science and technology develop rapidly, people can use a simpler method to copy embroidery patterns with a photocopier, and the role of paper-cutting as a blueprint has gradually diminished. At the same time, the patterns of paper-cutting have changed, and the cultural significance of traditional patterns is being forgotten by people in the Miao area. Miao paper-cutting has unknowingly fallen into an endangered situation and urgently needs to be protected and passed on.
