Southern Shaolin martial arts, which is widely spread among the people of Putian, is one of the main types of traditional Chinese martial arts. It originated from the martial arts of monks in the Southern Shaolin Temple. The predecessor of the Southern Shaolin Temple in Putian, "Linquanyuan", was built in the first year of Yongding in the Southern Chen Dynasty (557). In the early Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, ordered the abbot of the Shaolin Temple, Tanzong, who was named the general, to punish pirates. Tanzong sent Daoguang, one of the thirteen stick monks, to lead 500 monks to Fujian to quell the rebellion. After the rebellion was quelled, Li Shimin granted permission to build a branch temple of Shaolin in Fujian; the temple was named Jiulianshan Shaolin Temple, and it was known as the Southern Shaolin Temple. In the anti-Qing and restoration movement in the late Ming Dynasty, the Southern Shaolin Temple in Putian was surrounded and burned by the Qing court. The monks in the temple were scattered and hid among the people of Putian. Therefore, the martial arts of the Shaolin Temple began to be passed down in Putian, and it has a history of more than 300 years. There are many types of traditional martial arts in the Southern Shaolin Temple in Putian, totaling more than 60 types. The folks pass on the martial arts in the form of family inheritance and master-apprentice inheritance, and teach by words and deeds, and teach with the classics such as boxing manuals, sword techniques, and stick techniques. The inheritance is orderly and the veins are clear. The martial arts types that have a greater influence in the national martial arts community include Southern Shaolin "36 Treasures" boxing, Southern Shaolin Minghe 28 Constellations boxing, Southern Shaolin Weituo boxing, Southern Shaolin Iron Sand boxing, Southern Shaolin single sword, etc. Among them, many martial arts projects have won the championship and gold in provincial, national or world boxing competitions held in recent years, causing a sensation in the martial arts world. Although Southern Shaolin martial arts have spread far and wide among the people of Putian, the origin of Southern Shaolin martial arts, Putian Southern Shaolin Temple, was not rediscovered until modern times. In 1986, during the Putian City Cultural Relics Survey, the ruins of the Southern Shaolin Temple were accidentally found in a mountain village in Xitianwei Town, Licheng District. When the news spread, it immediately caused a huge sensation at home and abroad. On August 8, 1992, the Fujian Provincial Government officially approved the reconstruction of the Southern Shaolin Temple on the site, and invited Master Xuecheng to be the abbot of the Southern Shaolin Temple. Since then, the Putian Sports Department has organized several surveys and collections of the inheritance of Southern Shaolin martial arts in Putian; and held five large-scale Southern Shaolin Martial Arts Festivals, excavating more than 60 types of Southern Shaolin martial arts in Putian. The exquisite martial arts of its representative inheritors have won more than 200 awards in provincial, national and even international martial arts competitions, showing the elegance of Putian Southern Shaolin martial arts.
