🎧  Listen to Introduction

Shaolin Kungfu refers to a traditional cultural system that was historically formed in the specific Buddhist cultural environment of Shaolin Temple in Songshan, Dengfeng, Henan. It is based on the belief in Buddhist divine power, fully embodies the wisdom of Buddhist Zen, and is mainly manifested in the martial arts practiced by monks in Shaolin Temple. Shaolin Kungfu has a complete technical and theoretical system. It is manifested in martial arts skills and routines, and has Buddhist beliefs and Zen wisdom as its cultural connotation. Shaolin Temple, founded in the 19th year of Taihe in the Northern Wei Dynasty (495), is the cultural space on which Shaolin Kungfu depends. Shaolin Kungfu has been continuously enriched and improved along with the history of Shaolin Temple for more than 1,500 years. From the initial means of protecting temple property, it has gradually developed into a cultural expression form with complete technology and rich connotation. According to the boxing records handed down by Shaolin Temple, there are hundreds of Shaolin Kungfu routines passed down from generation to generation, among which there are dozens of boxing and weapon representatives that have been passed down in an orderly manner, and there are 72 unique skills and unique categories such as grappling, fighting, bone removal, acupoint pressing, and qigong. There are currently 255 types of Shaolin Kungfu boxing, weapon and sparring routines circulating in Shaolin Temple. Zen wisdom has endowed Shaolin Kungfu with profound cultural connotations. The inheritors of Shaolin Kungfu should first have faith in Buddhism, including faith in wisdom and faith in strength. The main god of Shaolin Kungfu's wisdom faith is Bodhidharma, the first ancestor of Zen Buddhism, and the main god of power faith is King Kinnara. Extraordinary divine power and extraordinary wisdom have always been the goals pursued by Buddhists. Using faith to govern fighting skills and using fighting skills to express faith is the fundamental reason why Shaolin Kungfu is a magical martial art, and it is also the difference between Shaolin Kungfu and other martial arts. The lives of Buddhist monks are bound by Buddhist precepts. In the specific environment of Shaolin Temple, Buddhist precepts have evolved into martial arts precepts. The precepts are manifested as martial virtues in martial artists, so Shaolin Kungfu often shows the style characteristics of restraint and humility, introversion and implicitness, and emphasis on internal strength, short and powerful, and the style of striking back after being attacked. The way of teaching Shaolin Kungfu is mainly through formulas, combined with the traditional patriarchal system of Shaolin Temple. Its core content is the master's precepts and deeds and the disciples' hard work. Shaolin Kungfu has reached the spiritual realm of "Zen and martial arts in one", and is the most outstanding representative of Chinese martial arts culture and the most representative way of presenting Shaolin culture. With the development of the times, the overall level of Buddhist belief in Han Chinese has declined, and the number of Shaolin monks has decreased year by year. The widespread use of firearms has caused traditional martial arts to withdraw from the field of military attack and defense technology as a whole. Modern people are keen on the technical performance of "Shaolin Kungfu" action routines, which has led to the marginalization of its inherent quality. All of these have caused the endangered situation of contemporary Shaolin Kungfu, and relevant parties need to formulate a plan as soon as possible to rescue and protect Shaolin Kungfu.
