Laza Festival

Gansu
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The "Lhaza" Festival is abbreviated as "Lhaza" in the dialect of the Lianhua Mountain area of Gansu Province. It is also called the festival. The "Lhaza Festival" is popular in some towns and villages in Kangle, Lintao, Weiyuan and other places. It is another grand festival second only to the Spring Festival. "Lhaza" is actually a Tibetan festival, which means "mountain god" in Tibetan. It is a festival to worship the mountain god, pray for good weather, and bless the harvest of grains and the prosperity of livestock. On this day, people in each village and town will slaughter cattle and sheep, and put out new flour plates and steamed buns and other offerings to worship the mountain god, which is also called "Cuan Laza". Its main activity is "dancing the gods" to thank the mountain god for protecting the grains and creatures within its "jurisdiction" for a year. Due to different climates, the time before and after the harvest of crops is different, and the villages and towns in each county have different festivals. The time of "Laza Festival" is also different. It starts from the first day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar and lasts until the first day of the tenth month when winter clothes are given away. The Mid-Autumn Festival on August 15 and the Double Ninth Festival on September 9 are the most prosperous. There are two things to pay attention to when eating "Laza". First, no matter how much meat and dishes are served, no matter how delicious they are, they cannot be eaten up. There must be some left, which symbolizes auspiciousness and abundance; second, you should neither come empty-handed nor leave empty-handed. When you come, you should bring your own new wheat flour steamed buns or "flower kang", good wine, etc. When you leave, you should also bring the same gifts, but less than what you brought, so that relatives and friends who did not come to eat "Laza" can have a taste and share the joy of the harvest together.
