Pick-up, commonly known as counting yarn, is a folk craft that has been passed down for a long time in the Miao area of Luxi, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province. It is different from embroidery. From the first stitch, all the needlework is done on the surface of the fabric. It is a skilled handicraft of Miao women. Miao women spin and weave their own yarn, and the cloth they weave is called "home-woven cloth". Because the yarn is spun by hand, it is not as fine and uniform as the yarn of machine-woven cloth nowadays. The yarn of home-woven cloth is coarser. Therefore, the vertical and horizontal directions are clear, and the warp and weft are clear. The headscarf made of home-woven cloth is about ten feet long and one foot wide, and there are various flower patterns on the headscarf. Pick-up is to pick out various patterns on the home-woven cloth headscarf. The process of picking-up is completely different from embroidery. It is to start a stitch from the center of the pattern (pattern) on a pattern, count three yarns, and then do the next stitch; count three yarns and one stitch to complete the pattern, and the last stitch returns to the center. In the process of picking up the number of stitches one by one, not a single yarn can be counted wrong. If one yarn is counted wrong, all the subsequent yarns will be counted wrong. Therefore, embroidery is an extremely delicate and strict handicraft. There is no pattern in embroidery. The pattern and shape of the flower are all in the mind. The flowers in the mind are picked out on the headscarf stitch by stitch, which makes people have to admire the wisdom of Miao women. There are more than 60 kinds of patterns picked, such as "Double Phoenix Facing the Sun", "Dragon and Phoenix Bringing Good Luck", "Carp Jumping over the Dragon Gate", "Pomegranate Flower", "Yangqiu Flower", "Peony Flower", "Maple Leaf", "Bee Picking Flowers", "Butterfly Playing with Flowers", etc., and there are very few characters. The thread used for embroidery is all blue or green, so the patterns on the headscarf have clear lines and are very elegant, without any fancy colors. Therefore, Xiangxi Miao embroidery has achieved great artistic success and has been favored by folk art experts and scholars at home and abroad, becoming the object of research and exploration. Its innocent vitality, concrete and abstract art forms, simple and pure contrasting colors, mysterious and ancient geometric figures, especially show the uniqueness of Xiangxi Miao embroidery craftsmanship. Miao embroidery has become the most extensive handicraft variety and cultural name card in Xiangxi, with unique patterns and rich connotations.
