Miao Nationality's "Autumn Festival"
"Ganqiu Festival" is one of the large-scale festive festivals of the Miao nationality in western Hunan. Shi Qigui's "Field Investigation Report on the Miao Nationality in Western Hunan" says: "The autumn festival is held on the day of the Beginning of Autumn". There is no written record of when the "Ganqiu Festival" originated. In 1940, Ling Chunsheng and Rui Yifu of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of China wrote "Investigation Report on the Miao Nationality in Western Hunan": "The Miao have a game of hitting autumn, which is quite impressive. They set up an autumn frame in a square during holidays or the New Year. There are two autumn wheels on it, each with four leaves, and each leaf is tied with a rope and a board to form an autumn frame. Four men or women sit on each wheel, and they sing as the wheel rotates, and men and women sing in duet. This grand festival activity is popular in Aizhai, Zhaiyang, Shetangpo, Jilue, Danqing, Paichou, Paihou and other places in Jishou City. Huayuan, Fenghuang, Guzhang, Luxi, etc. The entire activity of the Autumn Festival includes swinging, singing Miao songs, and playing Miao drums. Regarding swinging, Shi Qigui described it in "A Field Investigation Report on the Miao Nationality in Western Hunan" as follows: Singing and dancing on the swing is a kind of sports and entertainment for the Miao people. In the past, the Miao villages under the jurisdiction of Yongsui, Baojing, Guzhang and other counties all had it. When each session is held, the leader will post a notice in advance to show it to the public. After hearing the news, the neighboring villages and towns will perform the autumn festival at that time. The father leads his son, the brother leads his younger brother, men and women gather in groups, gather like clouds, happily go there, and one after another on the road. The Miao people's autumn festival has become a custom. Anyone who participates in the autumn festival will change into new clothes, and women will wear silver jewelry, which is bright and white, and extremely wonderful. There is even a group of people who like to show off their wealth. The dancers wear red and green ribbons and pleated flower skirts around their waists. They change new clothes several times a day for the public to see. Men and women dance up and down, spinning freely, like the spinning of a spinning wheel, attracting the attention of the whole audience, who applaud and cheer. After the dance, they take a short break to relax, and then start singing. The women sing and the men join in, and the winner is determined by the angle. There is also a player who sings and several others join in, and the audience judges the winner. There is also a singing competition with hanging cards, and the winner is determined in the final. After singing a song, they dance once, and firecrackers are set off to encourage the winner. Others who are good at music and trumpet playing gather in groups of three or five, blowing out tunes with clear pitches and vibrating the eardrums. They take turns, following each other's steps, showing their skills, and betting on pork, mutton and wine, and the winner eats the food. The loser has to pay for it. Due to the difficult life of villagers, the annual autumn festival and the market autumn festival are less frequently held. The festival is held every three to five years. Singing Miao songs and playing Miao drums are also important performances of the Miao Autumn Festival. Protecting and developing the Miao Autumn Festival will play a certain role in improving the ideological and cultural quality of the Miao people and building a harmonious society. In order to protect this traditional festival activity, Jishou City has established a municipal ethnic and folk cultural heritage protection leading group, issued a protection plan, formulated protection measures, and improved the protection mechanism. The festival activities that are deeply loved by the Miao people are passed down from generation to generation. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
