The pilgrimage to Nanyue is commonly known as incense offering. The "holy" refers to the god of Nanyue Hengshan, Si Tian Zhao Sheng Di, and the legendary fire god Zhu Rong. The local people and pilgrims call him the Nanyue Sheng Di Bodhisattva. It is said that Zhu Rong, one of the ancestors of mankind, was the first to invent fire, and he made fire to cook food, used fire to drive away beasts, and used fire to keep warm. He lived in Nanyue all year round and was buried on the south side of Hengshan after his death. In order to commemorate the great achievements of this ancestor, later generations named the peak of Nanyue Zhu Rong Peak, and gradually evolved it into the god of Nanyue Hengshan. As early as the Western Zhou Dynasty, the Zhu Rong Temple was built in Nanyue Hengshan, and people came from thousands of miles away to pay homage to the mountain god. During the Tianbao period, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty conferred the Nanyue Mountain God as Si Tian Wang, and renamed the temple Si Tian Huo Wang Temple, establishing the status of Hengshan God. After that, every dynasty held a "temple offering" here every year, and combined with folk sacrifices, a regular incense period was formed. The grand occasion has continued to this day, with more than 3 million people coming to Nanyue for tourism and worship every year. Nanyue Hengshan is one of the Five Sacred Mountains of China. It is located in the hilly and mountainous area of central Hunan Province, northwest of the Xiangjiang River, in the southeast of central Hunan Province. It is located between 11245-11250 degrees east longitude and 2712-2740 degrees north latitude. 72 peaks running from north to south pass through the territory, of which 43 peaks are located within the territory. It is a peak forest-shaped mid-mountain landform composed of granite blocks. The lowest altitude is 80 meters, and the highest altitude is 1300.2 meters, which is the main peak Zhurong Peak. Nanyue is known as "the most beautiful of the Five Sacred Mountains". It has both natural and cultural landscapes. It has always been a tourist, sightseeing, and summer resort for people. It is also a famous religious holy place. For thousands of years, it has been worshipped and yearned for by countless celebrities and scholars. Wei Yuan, a famous scholar in the Qing Dynasty, praised it in "Hengyue Ling": Daishan is like sitting, Songshan is like lying, Huashan is like standing, Hengshan is like walking, only Nanyue is like flying, the red bird spreads its wings and hangs down to the sky. Each of the four sides stretches for hundreds of miles, surrounding the main peak like an assistant, patrolling and assisting the main peak, sitting and receiving the audience as if receiving congratulations. The pilgrimage to Nanyue has a history of more than 4,000 years. As an important cultural carrier of the Chinese nation, the sacrificial culture carries the spiritual sustenance and national feelings of the Chinese nation, and embodies the national identity and ethical values. His existence is conducive to maintaining national cultural sovereignty, national unity, social harmony, and promoting the reunification of the motherland.
