Wa Wooden Drum Dance
The wooden drum dance, called "Ge Lao Dai Ke Luo" in Wa language, is a folk dance widely spread in the Wa villages in Ximeng Wa Autonomous County, Simao City. It is closely related to the folk activities of the Wa people pulling wooden drums. Historically, the Wa people regarded wooden drums as a divine tool to reach the sky and the protector of the village. It is also an indispensable tool for the Wa tribe to go to battle, summon members, and hold sacrificial activities. In the long historical process, the Wa people have formed dances related to wooden drums, and according to different forms and venues, they are divided into pulling wooden drums, jumping wooden drums, and offering wooden drums. There are many sets of drum beats and many ways to beat them. The drummers are all men, and each wooden drum is beaten by 2 to 4 people. Men, women, old and young sing and dance around the wooden drums, half squatting and half leaning, sending hips and turning, sometimes raising the right leg to stretch three times in "three bends", and sometimes raising the left leg and swinging the wooden mallet to rotate a circle. The dance movements are rough and powerful, passionate and unrestrained, simple and resilient, vividly showing the passionate, bold, rough and fierce national characteristics of the Wa people. Among the dances and music of ethnic minorities in Yunnan, the use of wooden drums as percussion instruments is unique to the Wa people. The wooden drum dance has now become a traditional dance of the Wa people in Ximeng. Regardless of gender, age or status, they will dance to the beat of the drums during major festivals. Hundreds of people can be drawn from the eight towns in the county to form a performance team to perform wooden drum dances at any time. The wooden drum dance in Ximeng County has participated in competitions, performances and large-scale activities organized by the state, province, city and county many times, and won various awards. The "Wooden Drum Dance" choreographed by the county ethnic song and dance troupe has been performed in the United States, France, Japan, Spain, Singapore, Taiwan and other places. The wooden drum dance truly, vividly and vividly reflects the primitive beliefs of the Wa people, reproduces the historical customs and culture of the Wa people, and also reflects the psychology, character and aesthetic consciousness of the Wa people. It runs through the entire process of national evolution and development, enriches the cultural life of the masses, and is an artistic bond for national unity and harmonious coexistence of all ethnic groups. The wooden drum dance is passed down from father to son and mother to daughter in the Wa ethnic group.
