Fanpai Miao Wooden Drum Dance
The wooden drum dance is a folk dance that is popular among the Miao, Yi and Wa people in the southwest. The drum shape is mostly cut from the trunk of a naturally grown tree, and the inside is hollowed out to form a shape. Generally, the wooden drum dance is part of a large-scale sacrificial activity participated by the entire ethnic group. The wooden drum is used as a symbol of the ethnic group. The sacrificial activities centered on beating and dancing wooden drums are full of strong implications of ancestor worship and nature worship, and have distinct characteristics of primitive culture. The wooden drum dance is a folk dance loved by the Miao people in Taijiang County, Guizhou Province. There are mainly two types: the fanpai wooden drum dance and the Shidong and Gedong wooden drum dances. Among them, the fanpai wooden drum dance has a greater influence. It is distributed in Fanpai Village, 26 kilometers southeast of Taijiang County, Guizhou Province. The residents of the village are all Miao people. Legend has it that the fanpai wooden drum dance originated from an ancient brother and sister who learned to dance from birds and insects. Since ancient times, the fanpai wooden drum dance has been passed down from generation to generation in Fanpai Village. Every year of the Ox, when the Drum Festival comes once every twelve years, the reverse wooden drum dance will be performed in coordination with the cattle slaughter and grand festival activities. The reverse wooden drum dance has a complete structure of opening, carrying forward, turning and closing, concise dance movements, rich combinations, and a warm and heroic style. It shows the life scenes and geographical environment of the ancestors and narrates the origin of the ancestors. The dance development adopts a progressive method, gradually pushing the plot to a climax, and each plot has clear levels and natural transitions. The actors sing and dance together, all five parts move, swinging the same side hands, stepping on the second and fourth beats, the dance posture is rough and unrestrained, free and beautiful, the head, hands and feet open and close with a wide range of swing. The reverse wooden drum dance consists of five drum beat chapters: "Niu Gaodou", "Niu Zhaxia", "Xiadifu", "Gaodouda" and "Zhaxianu", using single-click, combined, staggered percussion and other playing techniques. The drum beats are staggered and the rhythm is brisk, which is organically combined with the dance. Fanpai Village is rich in ethnic cultural resources, and still preserves the Miao cultural ecosystem with Fanpai Wood Drum Dance as its main cultural feature.
