Shanghai Huayangjing is the formula and lyrics used by Shanghai paper-cutting artists when they walk through the streets and set up stalls to perform. Its characteristic is that they sing while cutting, and sing the relevant Huayangjing while cutting patterns. The singing of Huayangjing mainly expresses auspiciousness and blessings. The lyrics are mainly folk songs, folk songs and jingles. Paper-cutting artists sing different Huayangjing according to the season, needs and each person's age, identity and gender. Shanghai people are accustomed to calling paper-cutting Huayang. In the past, many paper-cutting artists were illiterate and relied on Huayangjing to memorize various patterns. They were often invited to improvise lyrics to entertain guests at party or festive activities according to needs, and express the lyrics in the patterns. Often, after singing a Huayangjing, a pattern was also cut, which was applauded by everyone. Zheng Shulin, stage name Shi Hong, was born in 1960. He is a member of the China Arts and Crafts Association and the Shanghai Paper-Cutting Association. He lives in Wujiaochang Town, Yangpu District. In 1980, he studied Shanghai Huayangjing under Chen Tingyu and received guidance from paper-cutting master Lin Ximing. He collected and sorted out the almost lost shoe patterns, mastered dozens of different Shanghai Huayangjing such as "Hua Caiyan" and "Shieryue Huashi", and added content to express new life, giving Shanghai Huayangjing new vitality. He can "use scissors instead of pens", without the need for a draft, and his hands follow his heart. He can skillfully cut out various animal shapes or people's names with one scissor. While cutting patterns, he sang: Huayangjing, Huayangjing, everyone has a book, it depends on how you sing it. Singing makes the girls' hearts bloom, and singing makes the old people smile. Huayangjing inherits the paper-cutting skills of paper-cutting artists from past generations. The lyrics of the song condense the essence of Chinese traditional culture, which is the story behind the patterns and the indispensable content of inheriting the patterns. This form of singing while cutting reflects the traditional life customs of Chinese paper-cutting artists. At present, there are fewer and fewer Shanghai paper-cutting artists who can sing the Huayang Sutra. The traditional way of cutting patterns and singing at the same time has gradually disappeared and is in urgent need of protection.
