Zhuang Marriage Customs

The Zhuang ethnic group practices monogamy and exogamy, and people with the same surname but different clans can marry. In the past, matchmakers and parents arranged marriages, and early marriages were very common. Generally, parents arranged engagements for girls at the age of thirteen or fourteen. The matchmaker will send milk money, wine and food, clothes to honor the girl's parents, and clothes and jewelry for the girl to the girl's home. At the time of marriage, they offer food to the ancestors, worship the family hall, and report to the ancestors. The wedding ceremony is the same as that of the Han ethnic group. Marriage with a son is commonly known as "going to the door". The ceremony is the same as marrying a woman, but the ceremony is simpler. There is no betrothal gift from the man's family, and the woman's family entertains guests. There is a "transfer house" marriage custom, but it is limited to the transfer of the brother's sister-in-law to the younger brother's wife after the brother's death. It is rare now. For a long time, it has been popular to "sit at home" after marriage, and the woman will return to her parents' home after marriage. During the "sitting at home" period, both men and women have social freedom, but their behavior must be under the supervision of their parents. After pregnancy or childbirth, they will start to live in the husband's home (during the New Year and busy farming seasons, the husband or his younger brothers and sisters can bring her back for a short stay). If a woman is still infertile after three or five years, but her younger siblings have grown up and married, she must "live in her husband's home", otherwise she must remarry. After 1981, the time of "sitting at home" has been greatly shortened, and she can live with her husband for a long time in about three to five months or even a month. The Zhuang people in cities and counties such as Gejiu, Mengzi, and Kaiyuan, who are called "Tu Lao", have changed their custom of "sitting at home" and live in their husband's home after marriage. Young men and women also have free love. Whenever they go to the streets or festivals, they choose their spouses by singing folk songs and throwing flower bags (embroidered spherical incense bags). However, even if both parties are in love, they must obtain the consent of their parents and pass the "horoscope matching" before they can get married. When getting married, "Tu Lao" and "Nong Ren" are popular to splash water on the groom, while "Sha Ren" are popular to splash water on the matchmaker. On the day of picking up the bride, they have to carry baba to the bride's home. When the "Nong Ren" pays respect in the hall, the elders have to give the bride and groom wedding names. In the future, the parents-in-law will call the daughter-in-law by her wedding name, and the parents-in-law will call the son-in-law by her wedding name. When the "natives" of Kaiyuan and Mengzi invite matchmakers to propose marriage, they must bring wine and meat for the first time, which is commonly known as "beating dog dishes". Engagement is called "eating water wine", and marriage is called "offering food". When picking up the bride, the door of the bride's house is closed tightly, and the groom's companion must stuff a "red envelope" through the crack of the door and send a "girl chicken" before opening the door. The "girl chicken" is slaughtered on the same day to entertain the guests, and the feast lasts until dawn the next day, and people sing while eating. The next day, the bride's family still entertains the wedding party, but there is rice but no vegetables, and they must sing the "dish request song" before sending it out. After the meal, the wedding party takes the bride on the road, and the bride's family must send "noon", which must include a piece of pig's head. When the bride arrives home, she must give "entry money", and a shoulder pole is placed on the threshold to show that the bride will shoulder the burden of the family's life from now on. "Curved knives" or bows and arrows are placed on both sides of the door, and the bride uses the flower umbrella she carries with her to pick them open, indicating the bride's wit and courage. The "Nong people" and "Sha people" of Jinping, Hekou and Yuanyang call engagement "eating a small wine". On the first day of the wedding, the female companions who have been getting along well with the girl since childhood will bring fried soybeans and fried egg pancakes from their homes to the bride's house for dinner, and sing with the bride while eating. In the Mile area, after knowing each other and establishing feelings, the man's family will ask a matchmaker to go to the girl's house to ask for marriage. If the girl's parents agree, they will give the girl's birthday to the matchmaker to bring to the man's family. If the "eight characters" match, the man's family will ask a fortune teller to choose an auspicious day, and the matchmaker will tell the girl's family, and the girl's family will be busy making dowry for the girl. On the first day of the wedding, the man's family will choose a guy to represent the groom, and a girl and two older men will carry wine and meat to the girl's house to pick up the bride. On the morning of the auspicious day, the girl's family will invite all relatives to their home for a "marriage meal", and then select 6 men and women from them to send the bride. When the girl arrives at the man's house, she does not live with the groom, but lives in a room with the 6 sisters who come to send the bride. On the second day, the bride and groom will toast at the banquet, and on the third day, they will return to the bride's parents' home. In the next year's planting season, the groom will personally go to his mother-in-law's house to pick up the bride. From then on, the couple will work together in the fields and live together forever. In Gejiu area, the age of marriage is generally no more than 20 years old. Before the age of 18, parents will choose a partner for him. There are also free love, but parents must agree. First, two matchmakers are invited to "propose marriage", which is called "asking for words". The matchmaker will bring two pieces of rib meat (also called "asking for marriage dishes"), wine, and dishes to the woman's home for the second time to match the birth date. From the match to the formal wedding, there must be three rituals to arrange a small marriage. If it is believed that there is no "incompatibility" between the man and the woman, a small marriage (engagement) will be arranged. The man will give the woman a "small water gift", which generally includes 7.5 kilograms of wine, half a pig, 77.5 kilograms of rice, 160 yuan of gift silver, 66 yuan of milk silver, two long-headed cloths, and jewelry. After the engagement, gifts should be sent to the father-in-law's family on every festival, such as glutinous rice on the Dragon Boat Festival, moon cakes on the Mid-Autumn Festival, meat and baba on the Spring Festival, etc. The two families of the "big wedding" will agree on the wedding date through a matchmaker. After the wedding date is decided, the couple will have a physical examination and receive a marriage certificate. Within six months before the marriage, the woman will ask for a "big wedding" gift based on the man's family's financial situation. The amount of money is not fixed, but it must contain six characters, such as 260, etc. Other things must include a pig, a load of rice, enough wine and food for the banquet, several sets of clothes and shoes, silver bracelets, double-strand round waist back chains, silver, "blue silk" syringes, tube heads, etc. If the man's financial situation is good, the woman will ask for gold rings and earrings, etc. Both big and small weddings require guests to be invited and the agreed gift money is sent as a dowry for the woman, such as a double bed, bedding, boxes, clothes, etc. The day before the wedding, the man's family will "give gifts", that is, send a pig, and choose a "water gift" including cakes, tea, wine, money for side dishes, and red and green clothes for the bride. The wedding will be held the next day after the "give gifts". The groom of the man's side. When the matchmaker and the groom ride to the woman's house on horseback, someone must come out to greet them. After worshiping heaven and earth, the woman's family will serve chicken, fish, meat and three bowls of tea, which means that the chicken will fly away and the fish will run away. After eating, they will get up and return to the man's house, and the dowry will also be sent away. In the past, the bride rode in a sedan chair, but after liberation, she changed to walking. Since the 1980s, riding in a horse-drawn carriage, tractor and car has become popular. The door of the man's house is covered with mats on the ground, and a saddle is placed on the threshold. Before the bride and groom step on the saddle, the "scattering account" man is asked to recite the formula of "retreating the carriage" and throw grains, straw and copper coins in all directions while reciting, which is called "removing the account". A scale and a bucket of rice are placed on the table at the gate, and scissors and rulers are placed on the rice. After the wedding ceremony, two unmarried girls will take the bride to the new house. The groom will stand at the door and knock on the bride three times with a fan to symbolize the husband's power. Another woman will place a sieve plate with a seven-star lamp under the new bed. The seven-star lamp should be lit for three consecutive days. That night, the bride's escort will stay in the new house, and the groom can only sleep elsewhere. The next day, the bride and groom will worship the heaven and earth, ancestors, parents and relatives. After the worship, the elders will give jewelry or money, which the Zhuang people call "playing with bench money". A widow can decide to remarry by herself, but before remarrying, she must explain to her mother-in-law, who will "knock" the man's gift money and decide the amount of the gift money. When she gets married, she can only take her daily clothes. When she goes to the man's house, some villages cannot let people see her. If they are found, they will be fined. Some do not hold a wedding ceremony, but only invite relatives and friends to have a meal to consider it a marriage.
