Kui Tong Opera is a unique opera with a local folk style in southern Guangxi developed from Xiang Nuo dance art. It is popular in Bobai, Yuzhou, Beiliu and Luchuan in our city. The custom of dancing Xiang Nuo dance (also known as Yuanxiao dance) in Fengshan, Bobai has a history of more than 2,000 years. The villagers in Jiangning, the western part of Bobai, call dancing Xiang Nuo dance "Jiao Lingtou". What is precious is that this traditional folk art continues to this day. Every September 13th of the lunar calendar, there is a custom of holding "Jiao Lingtou" in the local area. The folks set this day as "Xishen Day", which is the only place in southern Guangxi. The villagers call the Taoist priests who "Jiao Lingtou" "Kui Tong Lao", and the name of "Kui Tong Opera" comes from this. Tiaolingtou is a folk custom to drive away evil spirits, bring good fortune and bless peace. When performing, puppets often wear masks. These masks are imagined monsters and ghosts, with slanting eyes and crooked noses, and scary facial makeup, carved from boxwood. During the performance, some puppets dress up as General Wu Lei, with masks like rooster crowns, holding iron chisels and axes in their hands. They dance fiercely to the accompaniment of double-sided long drums and gongs and cymbals and hoarse singing and shouting. The movements are concise and rough, and the dance style is primitive and simple. The singing segments are mainly: singing Haitong, singing Baiqi, singing Sanyuan, singing Sanjieye, singing Tiange, singing Tudiye, singing Hanshanye. There are also contents such as singing and dancing in the wild rice fields to pray for rain or catch rice worms.
