Luodong puppet show began in the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty and has a history of more than 150 years. Puppets are human and animal figures carved from camphor wood, connected by ten to twenty or thirty strings, and are a performing art that uses traction to express the movements of human or animal figures. There are many different roles to perform, mainly ancient costume dramas. The background music includes Chinese opera, folk tunes, modern songs, Hakka folk songs, etc. The lines are all in Hakka dialect. The performance is easy to understand, humorous, and the movements are lifelike, which fits the local customs and is very popular among the people. After inheritance and processing, it has now become an artistic treasure with unique Hakka folk characteristics. On April 22, 1999, the "Art Space Crew" of Guangdong Channel 1 filmed and broadcasted it. In 2001-2003, it participated in city and county performances many times and won awards and praise. In November 2015, it was selected into the sixth batch of Guangdong Province's intangible cultural heritage protection list. (Photo taken by Peng Yongjian) The production process of Luodong puppet show props is divided into (1) carving puppets; (2) painting and coloring; (3) making thread heads and belly cages; (4) making costumes; (5) making helmets and gauze hats; (6) making other props. Among them, puppet carving and costume making are the most critical. The puppet is carved from camphor wood, and the puppet head has a mechanism inside, which is controlled by silk threads to make the eyes, nose, mouth and tongue move. The neck of the puppet head is pointed at the top and thin at the bottom, and is connected to the belly cage by two threads. The belly cage is woven from bamboo strips, with slightly larger chest and hips and a slightly thinner waist. The hands are carved from wood, and the right hand is the movable hand. Its metacarpophalangeal joints and wrist joints are controlled by wires, and can perform actions such as holding a sword, waving a knife, holding a cup, and holding a cup. The feet are divided into "boot feet" and "dan feet". In the past, they were all made of wood, but later they were made to wear shoes and boots to make them more realistic. The puppet costumes are made of silk, and the colors are matched according to the characteristics of different roles. They are the epitome of the local dressing style and have local ethnic characteristics. Luodong puppet show is deeply loved by the local people for its unique local cultural characteristics. The performance venue is built with bamboo, divided into front and back stages, equipped with lights, slides, subtitles, etc., which is unique. The actors in each play are generally 6 to 15 people, depending on the different types of plays, responsible for threading, dubbing, drumming, lighting and sound, etc. Each has his own duties, orderly division of labor, skilled skills, and tacit cooperation. Most of the performances are works written and performed by the troupe members themselves, which are easy to understand, humorous, and colorful. Representative works include Mr. Hu Going to Qinglong Mountain, Double Lions Rolling Dragon, Modern Hakka Folk Songs, Losing Wife, Li Dongniang, and Prodigal Son Returning. The lines are all in Hakka dialect, which fits the local customs and is quite popular among the local people.
