🎧  Listen to Introduction

The custom of fire dragon dance is a traditional Mid-Autumn Festival custom in Baiyun District, with a strong mass base. One theory about its origin is that Liu Bowen called on the people to dance fire dragons to revolt and drive away the Yuan soldiers, and another theory is that it is related to the villagers dancing fire dragons to drive away locusts during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty. At present, fire dragon dance activities are held every Mid-Autumn Festival in Jianggao Town, Junhe Street, Baiyun Lake Street and surrounding areas in Baiyun District. On the day before the Mid-Autumn Festival, villagers use bamboo strips, banyan trees, grass vines, etc. to make a long dragon. In the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the dragon dancers in the village carry the long dragon to the ancestral hall, light incense and stick it all over the dragon body, and hold a grand fire dragon dance ceremony. After that, the fire dragon goes out for a tour, and the dragon ball dancers walk backwards, turn left and right, and lead the dragon head to swing the dragon tail and parade through the streets and alleys. Villagers worship the fire dragon and pray for good weather, peace and prosperity, and a good harvest.
