Lingchuan Paper Dragon Making Technique
Paper dragon making and paper dragon dancing is a traditional folk custom of the Han nationality. A grand dragon lantern festival ceremony is held in Pingcheng Town, Lingchuan County on the first day of October every year. On the one hand, it is to thank the dragon for blessing the good weather and good harvest, and on the other hand, it can drive away ghosts and evil spirits and bless the peace of the area. Pingcheng dragons are one male and one female, appearing in pairs. When dancing the dragon, the two dragons are in front, and the lantern team behind is magnificent and spectacular. Pingcheng paper dragons are made of bamboo strips as the skeleton, and rice paper (later butter paper) is used as the dragon head, dragon body, and dragon tail. The dragon head is the most difficult to make. It consists of the mouth with a dragon ball in the mouth, forehead, back of the head, horns, handles and other parts. The paper on which the dragon body and dragon tail are mounted is painted with dragon scales, and the scales are pasted with gold and silver paper. Before the dragon dance officially begins, after the respected elders in the village dot the eyes, the dragon head swings, the dragon eyes sparkle, and the dragon scales shine. Each dragon dance is composed of about 60 people, with lion drums, cymbals, and gongs as percussion instruments, and suona and other instruments as wind instruments. There are many kinds of content and movements of paper dragon dance, including "Auspicious Dragon Offering Auspiciousness", "Dragon Entering Yumen", "Golden Dragon Entwining Pillars", "Dragon Playing in Water", "Dragon Visiting the Garden" and other shapes; usually after the performance, the paper dragon is carried to the side of the river and cremated, which means "Auspicious Dragon Returns to the Sea". The artistic value of Pingcheng Dragon is mainly reflected in its material, craftsmanship and dragon dance routines. Pingcheng Dragon is purely handmade, and the raw materials used are natural raw materials such as paper, bamboo and hemp rope; dragon tying is a very delicate handicraft with sophisticated craftsmanship, complex processes and exquisite production. It has become a unique skill of folk artists passed down from generation to generation; dragon dance is also an extremely grand and exquisite performance process, following a series of fixed rituals handed down from ancestors, with extremely high artistic value and folk value.
