Pinghu dragon refers to the unique style of paper dragon in Pinghu Village, where the surname Liu is the main surname. Dancing paper dragons was a custom of the villagers of Pinghu Village during the Spring Festival before the 1940s and 1950s to pray for good weather, drive away evil spirits, and ensure a good harvest of grains and peace and prosperity. It has its own unique set of performance dance skills, musical instruments and music, and traditional customs. It is said that it is one of the traditional cultures passed down by the descendants of Liu's ancestors who migrated from the Central Plains to Pinghu. Pinghu dragon is made of bamboo and wood frame, and rice paper (later butter paper) is used to make the dragon head, body and tail, so it is called "paper dragon". The dragon head consists of the mouth (with a dragon ball in the mouth), forehead, back of the head, horns, handle (dragon handle) and other parts. The paper on which the dragon body and tail are mounted is painted with dragon scales, and the end of the scales is pasted with gold paper and the top is pasted with silver paper. The dragon body is equipped with a varying number of light bulbs (candles were used in the early years) for night dragon dancing. The Pinghu Dragon Dance Team consists of more than 60 people, using lion drums, cymbals, and gongs as percussion instruments, and suona (drummer) and other wind instruments. Accompanied by gong and drum music, the dragon dancers perform dance forms such as "Auspicious Dragon Offering Auspiciousness", "Dragon Entering Yumen", "Golden Dragon Wrapped Around the Pillar", "Dragon Playing in the Water", and "Dragon Visiting the Garden". After the performance, the paper dragon is carried to the side of the river, and a dragon-transforming ceremony is held. It is cremated and the ashes are carried away by the flowing water, meaning that the auspicious dragon returns to the sea.
