🎧  Listen to Introduction

Beilu Bangzi is a type of Bangzi opera that is popular in northern Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, northwestern Hebei and parts of Shaanxi Province. This type of opera has a complete range of roles and a rich repertoire. The singing style is mainly based on changes in the style of the board, and it also includes local folk songs and ditties. As one of the four major Bangzi operas in Shanxi Province, it occupies an important position in the Bangzi opera vocal genres. Beilu Bangzi evolved from "Shanxi Bangzi". In its long-term performances in other places, "Shanxi Bangzi" was influenced by local voice, folk customs, folk art, and appreciation habits, and gradually differentiated into Bangzi operas of different styles. Beilu Bangzi is the "Shanglu Tune" differentiated from "Shanxi Bangzi", also known as "Beilu Tune" or "Beilu Opera". It was not until the "First Shanxi Opera Observation and Performance Conference" in 1954 that Beilu Bangzi was officially named. Beilu Bangzi is divided into three schools in terms of singing style: "Daizhou Road", "Yunzhou Road" and "Weizhou Road". "Daizhou Road" refers to the Beilu Bangzi centered in Xinzhou area, also known as "Xiaobei Road"; "Yunzhou Road" refers to the Beilu Bangzi centered in Datong area, also known as "Dabei Road"; "Weizhou Road" refers to the Beilu Bangzi centered in Weixian County, Hebei Province, also known as "Donglu Opera". Beilu Bangzi Yunzhou Road (Dabei Road) is a school with great influence in Beilu Bangzi. Compared with Beilu Bangzi Daizhou Road (Xiaobei Road), it has a wider distribution range, including Tongshuo area in Shanxi Province, Fengzhen, Jining, Hohhot, Baotou in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Zhangjiakou area in Hebei Province, etc. Since the distribution range of "Dabei Road" spans across the three provinces of Shanxi, Hebei and Inner Mongolia, its singing, music, performance, repertoire and other aspects have formed frontier characteristics different from other schools. The singing style of "Dabeilu" represented by Wang Yushan (stage name "Shui Shangpiao") is different from the gorgeous and graceful "Daizhoudao", forming a steady, rough, high-pitched and bold singing style, which fully reflects the folk customs and regional characteristics of Datong and Inner Mongolia; the music performance adheres to the habitual high pitch (Bb) of "Beilu Tune", which is more fiery and passionate than "Xiaobeilu"; the martial arts percussion is more sonorous and powerful than other schools; the performance is less delicate and soft like "Xiaobeilu", but more stretched, bold and angular. The repertoire of "Dabeilu" includes both excellent repertoires common to Bangzi Opera and special repertoires reflecting local historical stories, such as the performance of "Walking on the Snow Mountain", in which the "Walking on the Snow" has been performed for a long time and has a considerable influence in the spread area. Beilu Bangzi is a very complete opera genre and is very popular among people. It has played a great role in the perfection and development of banshi singing, and has important value in the study of the development history of Chinese opera. It also plays a leading role in the prosperity of local opera industry.
