Shanxi
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Chongyang Festival custom in Huangcheng Village is a traditional folk activity with a long history that is spread in Yangcheng County, Shanxi Province, with Huangcheng Village as the core area. During the Chongyang Festival, with Huangcheng Village as the center, the 18 towns in the county and the relevant villages and towns in Qinshui Zezhou have rich and colorful "care for the elderly, respect for the elderly, love for the elderly, and help for the elderly" activities. This activity has now radiated to the entire Jincheng City, and gradually spread to some cities and counties in nearby Henan and Hebei, and even to a larger area. According to ancient inscriptions and poems, the area had the custom of Chongyang as early as the tenth year of Zhengde in the Ming Dynasty (1515). In the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Chongyang Festival, worshiping ancestors and respecting the elderly, climbing high and looking far, appreciating chrysanthemums and drinking, and reciting poems and singing lyrics became popular. This grand traditional Chongyang Festival custom has been preserved near Huangcheng Village to this day and continues. The local Double Ninth Festival not only retains the customary activities of loving, respecting and celebrating the elderly as a family unit, but also has resumed large-scale material exchange activities in recent years, and has seen the emergence of various modern entertainment and sports activities. Traditional festival customs have been combined with modern life elements, and the inheritance method is more unique and has a more far-reaching impact. Yangcheng has closely integrated the ancient national traditional festival of Double Ninth Festival with the lives of the people, not only preserving the cultural characteristics of the traditional customs of the region in a relatively primitive manner, but also making the inheritance of this national festival and folk culture more stable and more deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, presenting a group inheritance state in which the national traditional festival and folk culture complement each other and blend in the past and the present.
