Strange customs and practices in the Zhuang area of Xincheng County
The Zhuang ethnic group in Xincheng County has a large population and unique folk customs. "Children grabbing objects" predicts life, which is a custom of the Zhuang family in the old days to predict the interests and hobbies of children when they grow up. That is to say, when a Zhuang child is one year old, his parents prepare a "full-year banquet" for him, and relatives and friends come to celebrate. When the guests arrive, they sit on both sides of the main hall of the host family at the front of the table. A round table is placed in the center of the hall (there are also bamboo tables, or a dustpan covered on a basket instead of a round table). There are many items on the table, such as paper, pens, books, sewing kits, scissors, rulers, children's toys, coins, ornaments, glutinous rice balls, chicken legs and other items. Then the parents of the children (and the elders in the family) hold or support the children and turn around the table, allowing them to take any object. When the child first points to or takes a certain object with his hand, it is predicted that the child will have hobbies, greed, honesty, stupidity and wisdom in the future. If a boy gets a pen, paper or book first, he will be considered a person who loves reading, is well-educated and has good reason. If a boy gets a sticky rice ball or a chicken leg first, he will be considered a lazy person who likes to eat. If a girl gets a sewing kit and scissors first, she will be considered a person who is clever, thrifty and good at managing the household. Golden boy holds the tent In the old days, on the wedding day of the young Zhuang people in Xincheng, the bridal chamber was decorated with all kinds of new furniture and the bedding was bright and eye-catching. According to Zhuang customs, before the bride and groom enter the bridal chamber, the female elders of the family bring two boys and two girls to make the bed and hold the tent for the newlyweds, which means that the newlyweds will have sons and daughters after marriage and have a prosperous family. Generally, the elders first spread a new quilt and sheets on the newlyweds' bed, and put a red-dyed egg on each of the four corners of the bed, chanting words and praying for the newlyweds. Then, four designated boys and girls stand at the four corners of the bed, and after they use bamboo poles to put on and hang up the mosquito net, the elders distribute the red eggs originally placed at the corners of the bed to each child who holds up the net as a reward. "Stealing" the longevity bowl According to legend, the Zhuang people in Xincheng have the custom of "stealing" the longevity bowl, and this custom still exists today. All elderly people over 80 or 90 years old are considered "long-lived elderly people." When a long-lived elderly person dies, neighbors and relatives and friends will bring incense paper and candles to pay their respects, which is called "offering incense to the deceased." Some pilgrims also use white envelopes or fold white paper into envelopes, put in coins as "packages" and send them to the host family, which is called "incense gift." Then, the host family will inform the pilgrims verbally or in writing when the elderly person will be buried, and will host a banquet to entertain the guests after the funeral to express their gratitude. After the banquet, each guest will take the rice bowl they used to eat home as a "longevity bowl", saying that they are bringing the blessings of the long-lived old man to themselves and their families, and the host will not accuse them of "stealing". Some hosts also prepare new rice bowls with the word "longevity" printed on them in advance, and when the guests leave and go home, they will take the initiative to give each person a "longevity bowl" as a souvenir.
