Sanyang Swing
The folk performance of "swinging" in Sanyang Village, Sanyang Town, She County originated in the late Ming Dynasty and flourished in the Qing Dynasty. It has a history of nearly 400 years. There is a saying: "Ye Village Arhat, Zhong Village Lantern, Sanyang Swinging is known to thousands of villages." In the past, during the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival, in order to pray for good weather, prosperity, and peace in all seasons, local villagers sang and danced in the Hong Clan Ancestral Hall, Shuikou Temple, Guanyin Pavilion and the main streets of the village to celebrate swinging, playing ground drama, dancing for promotion, and walking the five devils. On this day, people from all directions, from Huizhou Prefecture to Changhua County, came to watch. Swinging is different from the "swing" for single entertainment. It has a special swing frame, a wooden chassis frame, four wooden wheels installed below, two bars tied to the waist of the frame, more than ten feet high, two wooden pillars stand in the middle of the chassis frame, a cross is supported between the two wooden pillars, and a swing board is hung on each of the four ends of the cross with ropes. If one of the swing girls is lighter, an iron plate is used to maintain balance. The chassis frame is supported by fine bamboo on the four sides to form a small, exquisite and gorgeous colorful canopy, which covers the cross. The chassis frame is carved with fine "Ruyi"-shaped patterns, which means everything goes well. The swing frame becomes square when it stops rotating and becomes round when it rotates, which means the sky is square and the earth is round. The Sanyang Swinging Festival is performed by four eight- or nine-year-old boys (girls were selected in 1955) selected by the village clan. They are dressed in white, red, green, and yellow clothes and pants, with hairpins and flowers in their hair, a colorful silk in the same color as the dress, and a colorful velvet flower on the top of their heads. Their faces are painted with rouge and powder, and they dress up as beautiful fairies. According to legend, they ride on the elegant swing to welcome the arrival of Guanyin Bodhisattva. The clan members are proud that their children are selected as swing girls, and they spend money to make clothes and buy jewelry for their children, and dress them up as beautifully as possible. Children who are not selected as swing girls will not be idle either. Ten to fifteen-year-olds will join the ground opera troupe; eight to nine-year-olds will join the shoulder-standing opera troupe (wearing drama costumes and standing on the shoulders of adults); two to four-year-olds will join the walking incense troupe, holding bamboo sticks and being carried by adults. When walking through the villages and alleys, the incense troupe is in front, followed by the shoulder-carrying and ground opera troupes. The adults carrying the children hold the children's feet with both hands while walking, and another person holds a red umbrella and another person holds a crescent-shaped wooden fork. When the team stops, the wooden fork is used to support the child's chest and waist diagonally for him to rest. The ground opera troupe and the swing are in the middle, and the last is the Wenwuchang band. On the swing board of the swing, there are four swing girls sitting respectively, with the ribbons around their waists fixed on the hanging board rope. When marching, gongs and drums cheer, and people gather around the two waist bars, pulling or pushing, driving the swing forward. When walking on the flat road, turn the cross while walking, and when turning or going up the steps, push and pull are replaced by carrying. When they get to an open area or a flat field on the street, they stop the swing, play orchestral music, and the swing girls start to sing Kunqu opera and Anhui tunes, mainly including "Putuo Temple", "Eight Immortals Meeting", "Beautiful Scenery on Earth is Better Than Heaven", "Watching Dragon Boats on March 3", "Playing Dragon Boats on May 5", "Meeting the Milky Way on July 7", "Picking Lotus", "Appreciating Lotus", "Picking Mulberry" and other nine sets. Sometimes they sing while turning the cross, and sometimes they turn and sing. The upper turn is like Chang'e spreading her colorful sleeves and running to the moon, and the lower turn is like a cluster of flowers flying; the sound is accompanied by the soft Wu dialect, and the song is like a beautiful oriole out of the valley. In 1960, Sanyang swinging was used as an independent innovative program to participate in the county's grand performance and won the first prize.
