🎧  Listen to Introduction

The stilt lion lantern is a lion dance performed on stilts, about 40 cm above the ground. The Liya stilt lion lantern originated in the late 1970s. At that time, the three brothers Sun Xianneng from the 5th community of Baisha Village in the town were inspired by stilts, so they integrated the two and created the Liya stilt lion lantern. The three Sun brothers were originally good at playing ground lions, and they had studied under Sun Chuandao, Liu Yunsheng and others. At the beginning of the stilt lion lantern, not all characters walked on stilts, only the laughing monk did. Because of its novelty, it was very popular among the masses. In the early 1980s, the lion dancers also changed from jumping on the ground to jumping on stilts. In the end, roles such as Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie were added, and all the performers walked on stilts. In the early 1990s, at the invitation of the fourth team of Youxian Chaozhen, the Liya stilt lion lantern team passed on this skill to other villages. In recent years, the Liya stilt lion lantern team has performed several times in and outside the county, and has won the first prize many times in the traditional folk performance activities in Zitong County.
