Sanskrit is the sound of monks chanting. Chinese Sanskrit is the original sound of Chinese Buddhist music, which originated from the statement, one of the five great wisdoms in India. The development of Chinese Buddhist music began with Yushan Sanskrit of Cao Zhi, the King of Chensi in the Three Kingdoms (Tangmi and Xianjiao). Shanghai Jade Buddha Zen Temple was built in 1882. For more than a hundred years, the temple has always attached importance to promoting and inheriting the traditional Buddhist Sanskrit art, combining this unique Buddhist ritual with art, and gradually forming the unique style of Jade Buddha Temple, which has been widely praised by people inside and outside the religion. Among them, the "World Peace Dharma Assembly" initiated by the Shanghai Buddhist community in the temple in 1952 had a great influence, so that the Sanskrit of Jade Buddha Temple has been widely praised by monks, believers and society at home and abroad. The content of the traditional Buddhist Sanskrit art of Jade Buddha Temple is extremely extensive, including daily Buddhist chanting and Dharma chanting. Among the many branches of the traditional Sanskrit art of Jade Buddha Temple, "Huayan Letters" is the most representative and the most widely used. The use of many instruments alternately or together makes the unique charm of the Buddhist chants more prominent, which is difficult for ordinary songs to achieve. Since the beginning of the temple, the Buddhist chants of the Jade Buddha Temple have been spread and passed down, mainly divided into two periods: the first was passed down by the first abbot, Master Huigen, and the successor abbots before 1949; the second was passed down orally from Master Zhenchan to Master Haihang and then to the current Vinaya (a kind of temple official) Master Wenyuan after 1949. In 1999, the Jade Buddha Temple Buddhist Orchestra was established under the auspices of the current abbot, Master Juexing, so that more monks can learn traditional Buddhist chants, and promote them in many performances at home and abroad in recent years, which has a positive and extensive social impact in promoting Buddhist thoughts and spreading Buddhist art.
