"The Legend of Liu and Ruan" is a legendary story spread among the people in Shengzhou, Xinchang and Tiantai, Zhejiang Province, about Liu Chen and Ruan Zhao who met fairies while collecting herbs, attained enlightenment and benefited the people. The "Legend of Liu and Ruan" revolves around the main themes of Liu and Ruan's encounter with fairies in Taoyuan, their marriage, their farewell to their hometown, their return to Taoyuan, their attainment of enlightenment, their practice of medicine to save the world, their benefit to the people and related humanities and natural landscapes. In summary, there are five aspects: the legend of Liu and Ruan meeting fairies while collecting herbs and their marriage with fairies; the legend of Liu and Ruan attaining enlightenment and benefiting the people; the legend of Taoyuan's natural landscape; the legend of Tiantai's customs and scenery; the folk proverbs and ballads about Liu and Ruan's encounter with fairies; and the legend about Ruan Temple. The "Legend of Liu and Ruan" was passed down by word of mouth among the people in the Eastern Han Dynasty, and became more widely circulated through the narration of later generations. The earliest written record is "Liu and Ruan's Encounter with Fairies" in "Records of the Underworld" by Liu Yiqing of the Southern Dynasty. After the Tang Dynasty, there appeared a situation where word of mouth among the people and the writing and creation by literati coexisted and promoted each other, becoming one of the most cited classic legends in ancient Chinese literature. In addition to oral transmission among the people, it has also been derived into folk opera, folk art, painting, sculpture, ceramics, bronze mirrors, etc., and has a wide influence. The value of the "Legend of Liu Ruan" is mainly manifested in: first, folk legends and literati's citations promote each other. The romantic love between humans and immortals and the yearning for the immortal world in the legend have repeatedly appeared in various literary genres from ancient times to the present; second, the "Legend of Liu Ruan" corresponds to the Liu Ruan Temple, the place name of Daojiupian, and the Taoyuan landscape, and relies on each other; third, the legendary products are integrated with the local specialty culture; fourth, the legend and folk beliefs are intertwined. Liu Ruan and the fairy have become the "medicine fairy" and "magic doctor" in the minds of the people. With the development of society, the change of modern entertainment methods, and the passing away of the older generation of narrators, the folk "Legend of Liu Ruan" is in an endangered state. "Legend of Liu Ruan" was selected into the sixth batch of Shaoxing City's intangible cultural heritage list in November 2015.
