The legend of General Liu is a folk literature project in the second batch of representative projects of Xuzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. General Liu's name was Liu Yi, a native of Huguang in the Tang Dynasty, and later moved to Fengxian. The legend of General Liu originated in the Tang Dynasty, formed in different historical periods, and has been passed down from generation to generation among the people of Fengxian. The legendary novel "The Story of Liu Yi" by Li Chaowei in the Tang Dynasty and the drama "The Story of Liu Yi in Dongting Lake" by Shang Zhongxian in the Yuan Dynasty included this legend. The "Book-passing Stream" in the legend of General Liu now exists at the site of the General Liu Temple, which was demolished in 1966. In the old days, Fengxian held an incense meeting next to the Liu Yi Temple from the second to the fifth day of the ninth lunar month. At that time, pilgrims from more than ten counties in Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan, and Anhui competed to attend the meeting and burn incense, which was unprecedented. There are two kinds of legends of General Liu that are widely circulated in Fengxian. One is "Liu Yi Sends a Letter to Save the Dragon Girl", which tells the story that after Liu Yi passed the imperial examination, he met the shepherdess of Jinghe River, the Dragon Girl of Dongting Lake. After listening to her story about her unfortunate marriage, he resolutely helped her, sent a letter to Dongting Lake, and rescued the Dragon Girl. Later, in order to thank Liu Yi, the Dragon King decided to marry the Dragon Girl to Liu Yi. Liu Yi was not a person who would repay a favor, so he rejected her sternly. The Dragon Girl fell in love with him and turned into Lu to marry Liu Yi. In this legend, the Dragon Girl's unfortunate marriage was caused by "parents' arranged marriage". Liu Yi was unwilling to marry the Dragon Girl when he was unwilling, and the Dragon Girl was unwilling to break her "heart oath" and marry someone else, which showed the desire of men and women for freedom of marriage. In Liu Yi, the ideal of perfect personality is placed, showing his personality charm of helping others in difficult times, integrity and selflessness. This legend angrily criticized arranged marriages, preserved the information of autonomous marriage, and had anti-feudal significance. The other is "General Liu Escorts", which includes a series of legendary stories such as flooding Wanzhuang, clearing locust plagues, flooding Sizhou, and sending gifts to Dongting. It mainly tells the legendary story of how Liu Yi led his troops to fight against the enemy to protect Fengyi during his lifetime. In the end, due to the disparity in numbers, he entered the Dragon Palace with the Dragon Girl, turned into a god, and eliminated disasters and difficulties for the people of Fengxian. During his lifetime, Liu Yi served as an official in Fengxian County, benefited the people, and forged a deep friendship with the people of Fengxian County. After his death, he still did not forget to bless Fengxian County and benefit the people. This legend praises Liu Yi as a kind man with affection, loyalty to the country, diligence in his official duties, and love for the people like his own children. This is still enlightening for educating people to choose the value orientation of life, how to be a person, do things, and be an official. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
