The Legend of Liu Xiu

At the end of the Western Han Dynasty, Wang Mang usurped the throne. After the Han Dynasty, Liu Xiu fled to Hebei, recruited soldiers and horses, and wanted to attack Wang Mang and revive the Western Han Dynasty. When Wang Mang learned about it, he immediately ordered the government troops to suppress him. Liu Xiu could not resist, so he had to flee with his men and horses. This is the story of Liu Xiu's escape to Ci County. It is said that Liu Xiu was weak at the beginning, and was chased by Wang Mang and retreated step by step. One day, when Liu Xiu fled to a village (now Liuwang Village in Ci County) with his men and horses, it was late, tired and hungry, so he ordered the soldiers to rest in the village for the night. A general heard it and said to Liu Xiu: "The officers and soldiers have just been thrown away, and they must be looking for us at this time." Liu Xiu said: "What do you think?" The general said: "This is not a place to stay for a long time, it is better to hurry on the road." Liu Xiu shook his head, but forced the soldiers to stay. At three o'clock in the morning, the moon was dark and the stars were high, and the men and horses slept sweetly. Unexpectedly, Wang Lang, who was stationed in Handan, really chased after him. Wang Lang was Wang Mang's confidant. He was ordered by Wang Mang to arrest Liu Xiu, but they didn't know that Liu Xiu lived in this village. They just wanted to harm the poor people here in the name of searching for Liu Xiu. When Wang Lang arrived at the head of the village, he reined in his horse, and the spy came to report: "In the village ahead, a fire that had just been extinguished was found." Wang Lang asked: "Is that all?" The spy said again: "No, there is still some fodder for horses." Wang Lang thought about it and concluded that Liu Xiu stayed here overnight, so he immediately changed his mind and divided his troops into two groups, one to surround the village, and the other he led into the village to search and kill. At this time, Liu Xiu was sleeping soundly in a dilapidated temple in the village. He didn't notice that the soldiers entered the village at all. When the soldiers were about to kill into the temple, Liu Xiu was awakened by a general. When Liu Xiu opened his eyes, he saw that the general had lost his helmet and armor and was covered in blood, and he knew that things were not going well. When the general explained the situation, Liu Xiu was shocked and wanted to fight with the soldiers with his sword. The general hurriedly stopped him and said, "Don't take risks. Come with me." So the general led Liu Xiu out of the back door and fled to the west of the village quietly. Unexpectedly, as soon as Liu Xiu arrived at the village, the government troops blocked his way. So the two sides fought fiercely, and after ten rounds of fighting, Liu Xiu broke out of the encirclement. However, his subordinates suffered heavy casualties and there were few soldiers left. At this time, a tall horse stood in front of Liu Xiu. Liu Xiu looked up and saw that it was none other than Wang Lang. Liu Xiu went up to fight without saying a word. The general stepped forward to stop Liu Xiu and asked Liu Xiu to go first, and he stayed to resist Wang Lang. However, Liu Xiu refused to leave the general and escape, and was willing to live and die with the general. The general did not allow Liu Xiu to distinguish and ordered people to force Liu Xiu to leave quickly. After Liu Xiu left, the general met Wang Lang. The two fought for dozens of rounds. The general finally couldn't resist the numerous officers and soldiers, and finally died under the random guns of the officers and soldiers. The next day, Liu Xiu learned that the general died for him, and he was extremely sad. In order to remember the lesson of "carelessness and loss of generals", he cut off one of his fingers. It is said that later, in order to avenge the loss of the general, Liu Xiu led his troops back from Zhuoyang, cut off the head of Wang Lang, and paid tribute to the general. Later, in order to respect Liu Xiu's courage to correct his mistakes, people changed the name of the village to Liuwang. As time went by, the name of the village "Liuwang" was mistakenly written as "Liuwang" or "Longwang" by later generations. When meeting a tiger, Liu Xiu buried the general who died in the battle on the hillside. After crying for a while, he led his soldiers to escape into the Taihang Mountains. Unexpectedly, Wang Lang learned about this and immediately dispatched heavy troops to chase and kill him. Liu Xiu had so few people and horses, how could he resist, so he had to flee with his people and horses. Along the way, they crossed mountains and jumped over ditches, like a mouse hiding from a cat, in a very embarrassing situation. Behind them, Wang Lang led a large group of horses and pursued closely, wishing to catch Liu Xiu at once. Liu Xiu ran and looked back, and saw Wang Lang holding him tightly, and he was very panicked. Liu Xiu rode his horse and ran, thinking: Wang Lang wanted to kill him, and at this point, he couldn't let the soldiers die in vain. So he passed the order and asked the soldiers to disperse immediately and escape. The soldiers refused to die. Liu Xiu suddenly stopped his horse, drew his sword and put it to his neck, and said to the soldiers: "If you don't leave immediately, I will end my life here." The soldiers were stunned when they saw it. For Liu Xiu's wish, they had to leave in tears. Liu Xiu watched the soldiers disperse, and then rode his horse and ran forward again. At this time, the pursuers behind were getting closer and closer, and the clothes and armor could be seen clearly. Liu Xiu became more and more panicked. At this critical moment, a ravine cut off Liu Xiu's way. The ravine was about ten feet wide and bottomless. Liu Xiu saw that there was no way to go forward and the pursuers were about to catch up. He was so anxious that he whipped his warhorse with a whip. The horse was in pain and spun around. It stood up suddenly and threw Liu Xiu to the ground. He almost got hurt. He got up, but the horse was gone. Looking again, he saw a tiger standing opposite him. The tiger had a bloody mouth and sharp teeth, and its eyes shot out cold light. Liu Xiu took a look and took a few steps back. The tiger took the opportunity to roar and pounced on Liu Xiu. Liu Xiu saw the situation and raised his legs to run, but he didn't expect that his legs were raised without deviation, neither forward nor backward, and he just rode on the tiger's back. Suddenly, Liu Xiu fainted with fright. Wang Lang chased from behind and saw Liu Xiu being carried by a tiger, jumping over the ravine and running south. He thought, this time it will be easier, the tiger eating Liu Xiu is more satisfying than killing Liu Xiu himself. So he led his men back to Handan. After Wang Lang left, the tiger carried Liu Xiu into a mulberry forest. When they came to the middle of the forest, the tiger stopped, and Liu Xiu woke up. He opened his eyes, and when he saw that he was still on the tiger's back, he was so scared that he quickly turned over and jumped off and ran. However, he felt something was wrong while running, and there was no movement behind him. He simply stopped and looked back, but the tiger was gone. Liu Xiu felt strange. It is said that tigers eat people without spitting out bones, so why did he not have any problem when he met one? Liu Xiu thought about it, but he couldn't figure it out in the end. Later, when Liu Xiu won the world, he thought of the encounter with the tiger again, and made up a reason: he was the real dragon emperor, and the tiger was a fairy sent by the Jade Emperor to save him. Therefore, in order to make people believe this, they ordered a temple to be built on the top of the mountain where he met the tiger, and a stele was erected to record his encounter with the tiger. From then on, this mountain was called "Yuhu Ridge", and the temple and stele still remain on Yuhu Ridge, which is located in the north of Yangjiatang Village. Besides the fake stele, Liu Xiu was separated from his subordinates and was alone and lonely in the mountains. Every day, he picked some wild fruits when he was hungry and slept on the ground when he was tired, living a life isolated from the world. Faced with such a situation, Liu Xiu was discouraged. He recalled the past and thought of his glorious momentum in the past. He felt that there was no way out at the moment, so he wanted to die. At noon that day, Liu Xiu tied a noose around a big tree and prepared to hang himself. Unexpectedly, just as he was about to tap his feet, he saw a group of people and horses running over. He took a closer look and found that these people and horses were his subordinates who were separated from him at Yuhu Ridge. He was overjoyed and hurried to meet him. They met each other in times of adversity, and they were both sad and happy. No one spoke for a long time. After a long silence, they told each other their own situation. At this time, the soldiers saw a hemp rope tied on the tree. They didn't know why, so they asked Liu Xiu. Liu Xiu felt very sad and told him the whole story while wiping his tears. When the soldiers heard it, they were shocked and persuaded Liu Xiu not to be sad. Liu Xiu said: "I have thought about this again and again. You should all go home early, so as not to be killed by the soldiers and lose your life, and make your family suffer." After hearing this, the soldiers knelt down and said: "General, if you don't agree with us, we will kneel here and die." Liu Xiu felt sad, stepped forward and helped the soldiers up one by one, and said: "I am not willing to end my life, but I have made such a decision because I have no other way." For this reason, the soldiers were worried and anxious, but there was nothing they could do. They looked at each other and stared blankly. After a while, a soldier stood up and said to Liu Xiu, "I have something to tell you, Marshal." Liu Xiu asked, "What is it?" The soldier said, "I had a dream last night. I dreamed of the Jade Emperor. The Jade Emperor said to me, 'Tomorrow at noon, a stone tablet with no words will fall from the sky. Whoever finds it will rule the world in the future.' He also said that it will fall nearby. I think, Marshal, you are very angry, so why not wait until you find the stone tablet? "Liu Xiu believed in gods very much. After the soldiers persuaded him for a while, he nodded. At noon the next day, Liu Xiu led the soldiers to look for the stone tablet. Not long after, they really found a stone tablet. This stone tablet was exactly the same as the one the soldier had described. Liu Xiu looked at it carefully and couldn't help but beaming with joy. He kept saying, "God helps me! God helps me!" After that, he burst into laughter. Seeing that Liu Xiu had changed his mind, the soldiers were so happy that they laughed to tears and couldn't help whispering to each other. What were they whispering? It turned out that the stone tablet was not sent by the Jade Emperor at all, but the soldiers made the stone tablet overnight and erected it there to persuade Liu Xiu. Now, the stone tablet no longer exists. , the place where the monument was erected had become a village. This village is the present-day Jiabi Village in Ci County, and the name of the village comes from the sound of "fake monument". After Liu Xiu left Jiabi, he planned to cross the Zhang River. Unexpectedly, the government troops chased him again, blocking the ferry and the way out of the Zhang River, leaving only one road. This road is Gunzigou in the southwest of Wuhe, Ci County. Speaking of Gunzigou, it is really dangerous. The ditch is several miles long and the mountain is hundreds of feet high. If anyone walks into the ditch and is surrounded by enemies on both sides, there is really no way to go up to the sky and no way to go down to the earth. In order to get rid of the pursuit of the government troops, Liu Xiu had to go to Gunzigou. Unexpectedly, when Liu Xiu was walking in the ditch, the spy came to report: "The way out has been guarded by the government troops and can't go in." Liu Xiu was shocked and asked: "How many troops are there?" The spy replied: "Replaced the minister Su Xian. "Liu Xiu thought to himself, this Su Xian is not like the original leader of the official army. Back then, he conspired with the old villain Wang Mang to send friends to Dongxiang Prefecture, forced my father to attend the banquet, and poisoned my father to death with three cups of poisoned wine, and helped Wang Mang to take control of the government. How can I forget the revenge for killing my father? But then I thought again, this Su Xian is extraordinary in martial arts and resourceful. Now the enemy is strong and I am weak, so I can't act rashly. So, Liu Xiu raised his eyebrows and ordered: "Return to the original place!" As soon as the voice fell, dozens of people gathered in front and behind and moved together. Liu Xiu turned his horse's head and went back. Who knew that after just a few steps, a group of people and horses came towards him. Liu Xiu looked up and saw that the leader was Su Xian. He was chasing with a full three thousand people and horses. Liu Xiu turned around quickly and headed south. Su Xian saw that the fat meat was at his mouth, how could he let it go? He hurriedly led his people and horses to follow behind and chased closely , Liu Xiu in front was sweating coldly. At this moment, a bright light suddenly flashed in Gunzigou, followed by a loud "bang", and Liu Xiu disappeared in a flash. In an instant, the mountains on both sides of Gunzigou seemed to merge in the middle, blocking Su Xian's way. Seeing that Liu Xiu was gone, Su Xian was so angry that he trembled all over. He hurriedly took off his bow and arrow and shot two arrows randomly into the ditch, intending to shoot Liu Xiu, but the arrow did not hit Liu Xiu, but hit the east side of the mountain. There were two loud "bangs", and another arrow fell on the west side of the mountain. Looking around, two streams of blood spurted out from the points where the arrows fell on the two sides of the mountain. Su Xian saw that the situation was not good, so he had to change his mind about capturing Liu Xiu. However, when he turned around to leave Gunzigou, a huge rock suddenly rushed down from the middle of the mountain, blocking the way forward. Su Xian was furious, drew out his sword, and split the huge rock in half , and made way for a small path, and then hurriedly left Gunzigou. Liu Xiu was safe and sound. Legend has it that the mountain god had rescued him long ago. Now, in Gunzigou, you can still see the two arrow holes and the huge rock that was split into two halves. Liu Xiuyan Liu Xiu escaped from danger in Gunzigou, which can be said to be a desperate escape, and he picked up a life for nothing. If you want to ask how the mountain god rescued Liu Xiu, we have to start from the beginning. It turns out that there is a story that has been almost forgotten. Legend has it that the mountain god used magic to cause the mountains to collapse and the ground to crack, blocking the way of the officers and soldiers. Then a strong wind blew, rolling up dust, and Gunzigou suddenly became dark and dusty, so that the officers and soldiers could not see anything. Liu Xiu didn't feel anything. He inhaled the dust and floated westward, as if he was riding on the clouds, and floated to the halfway point of the West Mountain. Strange to say, here Halfway up the mountain, there happened to be a rock cave that could accommodate several people. The entrance of the rock cave was small but the bottom was large. Liu Xiu was very happy when he saw it, and he immediately led his men into it. Before they sat down, they heard the soldiers chasing them, and they were getting closer and closer, as if they would soon reach the cave. Liu Xiu was so scared that he jumped straight in the heart. He knew that there was only one entrance to the rock cave, and as long as the soldiers came in, he would not be able to escape, and he would be captured. Just as Liu Xiu was worried, suddenly a big spider climbed up to the entrance of the cave from somewhere. The spider had eyes like millstones, a head like a haystack, and legs as thick as rafters. Liu Xiu was scared to death, afraid that the spider would hurt people, but the spider had no intention of hurting people. He saw it going up and down, left and right, and spitting out silver threads from its mouth like a shuttle. In just a moment, the silver threads turned into a big net, which tightly covered the entrance of the cave. The spider was sensible and quietly hid aside, as if guarding the entrance of the cave. At this time, the officers and soldiers searched the cave and saw that the entrance was tightly covered with spider webs, without any cracks. They concluded that no one would enter the cave, so they searched further. To this day, the cave is still in the south of Wuhe Village, Ci County. Because there are rocks in the cave entrance, people always like to call it "Liu Xiuyan". (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
