Shengzhou root carving

🎧  Listen to Introduction

According to the recollections of artist Zhu Zhongxian (born in 1935), Shengzhou root carving was influenced by the root carving art of Zhou Xilao (born in 1912, deceased) in Kaiyuan. It started from family workshops in the 1970s and gradually formed a new industry. Shengzhou root carving makes use of waste to make treasures and wood to make gold. It uses natural wood and processes it according to its natural form. Artists transform natural objects with the principles of nature by seeing the shape of objects and moving their hands with their hearts, so as to achieve the unity of man and nature. The themes are profound and the characters are vivid, but the carving group is huge. Among them, Zheng Jianfu, Wu Xiaoyang, Zhou Yang, Zheng Xingguo and others have dozens of works that have won provincial, national and international gold medals, and some have been collected by international friends. The biographies and works of root carving artists represented by Zheng Jianfu, Wu Xiaoyang, Zhou Yang and others have been included in the "Chinese Folk Celebrity Directory", "Chinese Contemporary Art Celebrity Directory", "21st Century Talent Pool" and "Chinese Root Carving Art", "Zhejiang Root Art" and other publicly issued magazines and publications. Shengzhou root carving, starting from protecting the ecological environment, is the first in the country to use ancient sunken wood and dead wood as raw materials to continuously improve the selection of materials and craftsmanship, which is more in line with the new concept of harmonious coexistence between man and nature. Shengzhou root carving has developed from seven or eight people in the 1970s to two or three hundred practitioners at present. In particular, after seven or eight root art workshops moved into the "art village" specially built in the city, it has become a national root carving base with strong strength and high grade. With representative figures and "art villages" as the leader, it has radiated the whole city. Zheng Jianfu, Wu Xiaoyang, and Zhou Yang have their own 200m2 showrooms in the art village, each displaying more than 200 works of art, and they are often open for people to visit and appreciate. However, how to prevent elegant art from becoming a sideline or a street stall; how to cherish and protect rare natural resources and reduce waste; how to cultivate and inherit artists in the form of echelons, urgently need government support and national protection. In June 2007, it was included in the second batch of Zhejiang Province Intangible Cultural Heritage List Project. Information source: Shaoxing Cultural Center (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
